I measured the battery and heat generation of Microsoft's high-spec notebook PC 'Surface Laptop Studio 2' to see if it is suitable for carrying around.

Microsoft's high-end notebook PC '

Surface Laptop Studio 2 ' can transform into three styles by moving the monitor position: laptop mode, studio mode, and tablet mode, and has a benchmark score more than twice that of the previous model. Although it is a notebook PC, it is a high-spec machine suitable for all kinds of work. The total weight of the battery and main unit is about 2.4 kg, so it's a bit heavy to carry, but in order to find out whether Surface Laptop Studio 2 can be used on the go without any problems, we tested the battery operating time under a workload. I tried to measure how much temperature it gets and how much noise the fan makes to exhaust heat.

The battery capacity of Surface Laptop Studio 2 is nominally 58WH and minimum is 56WH, and the official website states that the battery life is up to 19 hours for models equipped with Intel's Iris Xe GPU and up to 18 hours for models equipped with NVIDIA GPU. It has been. However, this running time is based on 'normal device usage', so this time I measured the battery running time when watching YouTube Live at maximum screen brightness and maximum volume. Other than making sure that the screen does not turn off or go to sleep during the process, the default values are kept as they are.

The image at the start of measurement is below. To make it easier to understand changes in the numbers, I display the battery settings screen on the front of Surface Laptop Studio 2 and play YouTube Live in the background. Start shooting with battery capacity at 90%.

Below is an image after 5 minutes, and you can see that the battery capacity has dropped to 89%.

After that, it continued to be consumed at a rate of 1% every 5 minutes, dropping to 50% in 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Just 7 hours later, it dropped to 4%.

After another 5 minutes, the screen was off. When I pressed the power button in this state, the power was turned on at 4%, so even if I turned off the automatic screen brightness and sleep, it seems that the power will be turned off automatically when it drops to 4%.

The time it took for the remaining battery power of Surface Laptop Studio 2 to go from 90% to 4% was 7 hours (420 minutes). Microsoft's mobile PC '

Surface Laptop Go 3 ' released at the same time has a nominal power of 41Wh and a minimum power of 40Wh, but using the same measurement method, it took 6 hours and 56 minutes (416 minutes) to go from 90% remaining battery level to 10%. Almost the same result.

Surface Laptop Studio 2 is equipped with Windows 11 Home, and you can see the battery level graph from 'Power & Battery' in Windows 11 Home. According to this, you can see that it decreases by more than 10% every hour.

Next, I measured the charging speed. Screen settings remain unchanged and YouTube live playback is stopped.

After 5 minutes, it rose from 5% to 12%.

It was charged to 81% in just 1 hour.

Then, after 1 minute, it dropped to 80%. After that, it did not rise above 80%. This is because

smart charging , which protects the battery from deterioration, is automatically turned on and the maximum charge is limited to 80%. Smart charging automatically turns on and off based on your battery usage patterns.

The charging graph is below.

Next, how much heat does it get when performing heavy work on Surface Laptop Studio 2 under load with the load test software '

BurnInTest ', and how much noise does the fan make to exhaust heat? was measured.

Temperature measurements were taken with a thermo camera “ FLIR ONE Pro ”. Please note that the screen part is glossy, so it may not be possible to measure the correct temperature.

Below is a photo of Surface Laptop Studio 2 before the load test. When the power was on while charging and I was doing simple browser operations, the hottest part of the PC was about 21.6 degrees, and the AC adapter was 22.6 degrees. At this stage, you will hardly feel any heat when you touch it.

Below is a photo taken after carrying out a load test for 15 minutes. The surface of the PC has risen to about 28 degrees Celsius, and you can clearly feel the heat when you touch the keys and touchpad area. There is also a heat exhaust fan in the lower right, which heats the area up to 32.5 degrees.

When looking from the side near the heat exhaust fan, the temperature at the hottest point was as high as 38.5 degrees.

The bottom of Surface Laptop Studio 2 is getting hot at just under 34 degrees, and the desk where the PC was placed is also heating up to over 30 degrees. If you are working for a long time, you need to be careful about where you place your PC.

Also, the AC adapter was over 41 degrees at its hottest point.

While performing the load test, we filmed a movie and measured it with a sound level meter to see how much noise the fan could make.

The sound level meter measured a maximum of 51.8dB at a position close to the fan. The standard and guideline for noise level is 50 dB , which is ``loud but not disturbing to a conversation. '' If you are working in a quiet space, you can clearly hear the exhaust noise, but if you move a little further away, it becomes noticeable. To the extent that it no longer becomes. Even if you do heavy work while on the go, it won't be so loud that people around you will think it's noisy.
