We checked the battery and cooling performance of ASUS' portable gaming PC 'ROG Ally'

PC manufacturer ASUS released the portable gaming PC 'ROG Ally' on June 14, 2023. The PC comes with Windows 11 Home 64bit, a 7-inch LCD, AMD's

Ryzen Z1 series gaming SoC for portable PCs, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. We looked into the battery charging time and battery life, as well as the temperature of the main unit, which are concerns when using ROG Ally, which allows you to play PC games anytime, anywhere.

After playing ROG Ally, I left it overnight without charging it, and the battery was just about dead, so I connected the included AC adapter to the USB Type-C terminal and tried charging it. The official time to charge the battery is 1.6 hours, that is, it takes 1 hour and 36 minutes to charge to 100%.

When I plugged in the AC adapter, the charging indicator next to the volume control button lit up.

Just an hour later, the battery was at 95%. It only took an hour to charge the device to a playable level.

Next, I decided to play games continuously after charging the battery to 100%. The room temperature was about 27 degrees and the humidity was about 40 degrees.

I took a photo of the ROG Ally unit just before playing a game with

a FLIR camera , which can measure the temperature of objects using infrared light. The surface where the display is visible was 27.3 degrees.

The back side was 27.9 degrees. Both the front and back are roughly the same temperature as room temperature.

This time I played

ELDEN RING . ELDEN RING requires a high level of specs , so it is difficult to play unless you have a PC with a certain level of performance or a stationary home console.

When playing, the brightness and volume of ROG Ally were set to maximum.

In addition, the settings for Elden Ring are set to 'full screen,' screen resolution '1920x1080,' automatic drawing adjustment 'ON,' ray tracing quality 'high,' and quality setting 'high.'

After about 30 minutes of playing in this state, the battery level had dropped to 66%.

When I measured the temperature with FLIR, the surface rose to 41.9 degrees. However, the temperature was high in the central display area, and the temperature at both ends of the main unit when held in the hand was just over 30 degrees. ROG Ally is equipped with the ROG Intelligent Cooling System, a cooling technology that ASUS has developed for gaming PCs, which can quietly cool the main unit at any angle. When I actually played, the fan noise was very quiet, so I didn't notice any exhaust noise.

The following movie shows the sound of the ROG Ally fan while playing Elden Ring. You can also see how the temperature is measured with FLIR.

When I measured the back side with FLIR, it looked like this. The part in the center with a low temperature and shown in blue is the ventilation hole.

The heat exhaust vent on the top surface exceeded 55 degrees.

When I held my hand in front of the air vent, it didn't feel hot, but rather just felt like warm air was coming out.

After about an hour and 10 minutes of playing, the battery dropped below 20%. At this point, Windows 11 automatically enabled battery saving mode and the screen became a little darker.

Then, about an hour and 20 minutes into playing, the desktop screen suddenly appeared and a pop-up message appeared saying that the battery was low.

I returned to the game screen and continued playing, but at about 1 hour and 23 minutes, a system error sound began to ring and the console shut down.

The temperature on the surface at this time was about 39 degrees.

The back side is 40 degrees, almost the same as the front side.

The heat exhaust vent on the top surface was 57.3 degrees. Both temperatures remained almost the same after 30 minutes of play.

When I played Elden Ring this time, the battery ran out in about an hour and 20 minutes, but since I was playing with the image quality settings set high, the battery life should be longer if I play games with lower spec requirements or lower the image quality settings. When I tested the battery life with Steam Deck , the temperature rose as the battery level decreased, and the performance decreased and the screen sometimes stuttered, but with ROG Ally, the screen simply became dark due to the Windows 11 function, and performance did not decrease or the screen stuttered until the very end of the battery.

In addition, the cooling performance of ROG Ally is excellent, and although it feels slightly warm when you hold the main unit, it never gets so hot that it becomes uncomfortable to hold. Since you play with a portable gaming PC by holding it in your hand, there is a concern that your hands will get sweaty or you may get low-temperature burns if the main unit temperature gets too high, but the temperature of the controller only rises to about 40 degrees at most, even if you play until the battery runs out, so you can play for long periods of time without worry.
