Can you really play the portable gaming PC 'Steam Deck' anytime, anywhere? I measured temperature and battery consumption.

The mobile gaming PC 'Steam Deck' developed by Valve, which operates the game distribution platform 'Steam', is characterized by being able to play games that can only be played on your home PC anytime, anywhere. However, when I hold it in my hand and use it outside, I am concerned about exhaust heat and battery consumption. I had the opportunity to touch the Steam Deck, which will start shipping to Asia including Japan on December 17, 2022, so I checked the temperature and battery consumption.

And you can check how you played various games with Steam Deck in the following article.

I tried playing various games with 'Steam Deck' where you can play Elden Ring and Katamari anytime, anywhere - GIGAZINE

First, I tried playing with the battery fully charged. When I checked the battery level, it was displayed that I could play up to 6 hours and 8 minutes.

The brightness of the screen is adjusted to the image below, and the automatic brightness adjustment is turned on.

The temperature of the Steam Deck is measured with a thermal camera FLIR . Room temperature was about 24 degrees.

When measuring the main body temperature immediately after startup, the front with a 7-inch display has a maximum point of 30.6 degrees.

The exhaust port with the cooling fan on the top is 31.6 degrees.

The exhaust with the rear fan was 31.8 degrees.

I played the online rank match of '

Tekken 7 ', which felt that the battery drained particularly quickly while playing the game.

After playing for about 30 minutes and checking the battery level, it was down to 70%. The remaining battery time is displayed as '2 hours 20 minutes' on the Steam Deck.

When I measured the temperature, the front was 43.5 degrees.

The exhaust port on the top is 57.0 degrees.

On the back, the temperature rose mainly on the left side where the exhaust port is located, and it was 54.5 degrees. Although part of the main unit is getting hot, when actually playing, I hold the left and right grips firmly, so I think that the back part may be a little warm, so I don't feel the heat. There were hardly any.

Next, I played 'Elden Ring' as it is. 'Elden Ring' is a game that requires a lot of PC specs, and the exhaust heat is large, and the impression that the fan on the top is louder than 'Tekken 7'. However, you can play without problems for about 30 minutes from the start of play.

The following movie actually shot the exhaust sound while playing 'Elden Ring'. If you press the power button halfway through to put it into sleep mode, you'll notice the fan quiets down. The sound of the fan is not so loud when actually playing, but it might be a little annoying if it starts spinning violently.

When playing 'Elden Ring' for about 30 minutes, the battery was consumed more than 'Tekken 7', and the remaining battery power decreased from 70% to 27% at once.

Furthermore, about 50 minutes after the start of play, the remaining battery level is only 8%.

When the battery level was too low, the message 'Battery low' was displayed in yellow in the lower right corner.

Also, although the cooling fan keeps spinning all the time, the performance of 'Elden Ring' suddenly becomes heavy, and the frame rate is forcibly lowered, and it is jerky enough to interfere with play. There was also. In the movie below, you can see how the frame rate actually drops.

When I measured the temperature of the Steam Deck at this timing, it was 49.7 degrees on the front.

The top surface had risen to 63.5 degrees.

The back is 56.0 degrees. It doesn't feel hot to hold, but if you hold your hand in front of the exhaust port, you can feel a lot of warmth.

Still, when I continued to play, the indication 'Battery level is low' was displayed in red this time.

And finally the battery ran out and it automatically shut down.

I played 'Elden Ring' and the battery ran out in less than an hour. Combined with the play of 'Tekken 7', the battery lasted about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

I decided to charge the Steam Deck at once.

Steam Deck's power input is 45W USB Type-C PD3.0, which is done by connecting the included charger to the USB Type-C port. The battery is 40Whr.

The output (OUTPUT) of the AC adapter of the charger is 5V-3A, 9V-3A, 1.5V-3A, 20V-2.25A.

The battery was able to charge to 98% in 2 hours 46 minutes.

Power consumption also depends on the specs of the game, so if you play a lighter game, you can expect the battery to last longer. However, when playing PC games that require a certain level of machine performance, such as 'Elden Ring' and 'Tekken 7', the battery runs out in about two hours, so it is still essential to carry a charger. .

The Steam Deck can be pre-ordered on the official website , and the price is 59,800 yen including tax for the 64GB eMMC model, 79,800 yen including tax for the 256GB NVMe SSD model, and 99,800 yen including tax for the 512GB NVMe SSD model.
