IPhone 13 Pro loses to Pixel 5a in 'blind test of photos taken with smartphone'

Marques Brownlee, a gadget-based YouTuber, carried out a project to 'blindly test photos taken with smartphones released in 2021 to determine the most highly rated smartphone camera.' Speaking of terminals released in 2021, there areiPhone 13 series , Pixel 6 , Galaxy S21 Ultra, etc., but Pixel 5a released two months before that is better than Pixel 6 Pro which is the latest model of Pixel series, etc. It is a result of inclusion.

If you ask something like 'A is a photo taken with an iPhone 13 Pro and B is a photo taken with a Zenfone 8. Which photo is better?', The result is not the photo itself, but the result. It will be influenced by the preconceptions about the manufacturer and model.

However, Brownlee argues that if you remove the label about the model so that you don't know which is the iPhone 13 Pro or which is the Zenfone 8, the person asked can judge the superiority or inferiority purely by using the photo as a clue.

Brownlee decided to do this 'test comparing two unlabeled photos' on a total of 16 smartphones released in 2021.

Since it is a test that compares two cards, it is conducted in a tournament format with a maximum of four races.

Voting took place on Instagram.

The photos to be compared are taken of the same subject under almost the same conditions.

The smartphones that entered are Samsung's '

Galaxy S21 Ultra ', ZTE's ' Axon 30 Ultra ', ASUS's ' ROG Phone 5 ', Lenovo's ' Legion Duel ', Sony's ' Xperia PRO-I ', OPPO's ' Find X3 Pro' , Xiaomi's ' Mi 11 ultra ', OnePlus's ' OnePlus 9 Pro ', Google's 'Pixel 6 Pro', Google's 'Pixel 5a', Apple's 'iPhone 13 Pro', Motorola's ' Motorola Edge 20 ', ASUS 'Zenfone 8', Xiaomi's ' Poco X3 GT ', Microsoft's ' Surface Duo 2 ', Realme's ' Realme GT '.

In the first round, Mr. Brownlee sitting in a chair was photographed with each smartphone, and he was asked to vote which of the photographs taken by the two competing cars felt better.

In addition to Mr. Brownley in the center, which is the subject, various things such as the scenery outside the window, the blue mat, the golden helmet, and the red pillow are reflected in the photo, and these are used as indicators to determine the

dynamic range of the photo. It was possible to check it.

Here is a list of the photos I took. It was taken at almost the same angle and at the same time, but you can see that there are subtle differences.

Although some of the results of the first round were reasonable for Mr Brownlee, he said that the battle between gaming phones such as 'ROG Phone 5' vs. 'Legion Duel 2' was a rather delicate game. I am. The photo below shows 'ROG Phone 5' on the left and 'Legion Duel 2' on the right, but the photo on the left shows the outside of the window firmly, while the halo around Mr. Brownlee's face shows a vague light. The effect is happening.

In addition, the following image is a picture of 'Pixel 5a' on the left and 'Pixel 6 Pro' on the right. There is almost no difference, but because the background of 'Pixel 5a' is slightly blurred due to the difference in sensors, Mr. Brownlee expected that 'Pixel 6 Pro' will win by a small margin. However, it was the 'Pixel 5' who won the vote as a result. Regarding this result, Brownlee said that the overall photo was well-balanced.

In the second round, we compared luncheon mats, candles, knives, cookies, ribbons, etc. on the desk with photographs taken from directly above.

In the second round, the subject was flat, there was no depth, and there were few problems with dynamic range, so it was a close battle compared to the first round.

The focus was on the exposure and color of the photo, and Brownlee said the 'brighter photo' won in every match. The winners were 'ROG Phone 5', 'OnePlus 9 Pro', 'Pixel 5a' and 'Realme GT', and 'Pixel 5a' beat 'iPhone 13 Pro'.

In the semi-finals, a picture of a Rubik's cube, a

clapperboard used for filming, and a billiard ball lined up on a red pool table.

In the 'ROG Phone 5' vs. 'OnePlus 9 Pro' battle, the 'OnePlus 9 Pro' won.

Also, in 'Pixel 5a' vs. 'Realme GT', 'Pixel 5a' won and advanced to the final.

Red is a color that is particularly difficult to take in photographs, and the focus was on how to express red.

The winning image has a solid red color, while the losing one loses the actual red color because the photo is too bright, resulting in a so-called 'overexposure' condition.

The final match was a match between 'OnePlus 9 Pro' and 'Pixel 5a'. The picture taken is a line of three men against the backdrop of the sky and a distant building.

As a result of the vote, the winner was the 'Pixel 5a' with an actual selling price of 51,700 yen.

Comparing the two photos, the one on the left taken by 'Pixel 5a' seems to have more sky colors and a clearer facial expression. Seventy-five percent of the voters voted for the 'Pixel 5a' photo.

Brownlee points out some of the findings from the blind test results.

The first is that 'when comparing two photos, the brighter one is easier to win.'

It doesn't necessarily mean that 'a bright photo is a better photo', but at least a bright photo seems to be more noticeable.

The second is that 'photo

sharpness is not always important.' Mr. Brownlee seems to prefer photos with clear outlines, but it seems that the photos posted on SNS are compressed and the difference in sharpness becomes subtle, so it does not have much to do with the voting result.

It seems that every year there is a comment that 'I think you should upload it to Google Drive and download the uncompressed photo', but most of the photos that modern people see are posted on SNS. Since it is a photo and the likes and dislikes of the photo are judged based on these photos, Mr. Brownley says that he has adopted a method of getting votes based on the photos posted on SNS.

The third is that 'people want a'finished photo'in the unedited state immediately after shooting.' If you are a person who is enthusiastic about photography, you can edit and process it with various software, but many people post or share the photograph as it is on SNS by

'taking it out', so at the time of shooting Brownlee speculates that he prefers good-looking photos.

The fourth is that 'the price of the smartphone was not related to the result.' The image below shows the green '$$$' when the expensive one wins and the red 'x' when the cheap one wins. Expensive smartphones may win, but cheap smartphones often win, and the final winner, the Pixel 5a, is also a relatively inexpensive model among the smartphones that participated this time.

According to Mr. Brownlee, there were more than 3 million votes in total in this project.
