30年前以上前の動作するApple製コンピューター「Apple IIe」が屋根裏部屋から発見される

ニューヨークに住むフォーダム大学ロースクールの教授であるJohn Pfaff氏は、両親が住んでいた家の屋根裏部屋から30年以上昔に製造されたApple IIeを発見しました。Pfaff氏が電源を入れてみたところ、驚くべきことにApple IIeは問題なく起動したそうです。

1983年にリリースされたApple IIeは、Appleが1977年にリリースしたパーソナルコンピューターApple IIの後継機種であり、Apple II plusに次ぐ第三代目のバリエーション。大文字と小文字が使える機能や、ShiftキーやCaps Lockキーの機能がフル搭載された点が特徴だったとのこと。屋根裏部屋からApple IIeを発見したPfaff氏は、実際に起動した様子を「オー・マイ・ゴッド」という驚きの言葉と共にTwitterへ投稿。30年以上昔のApple IIeを前にして、まるで自分が10歳に戻ったかのようだと述べています。

発見されたApple IIeには1978年にScott Adams氏によって開発されたテキストコマンドゲームの「Adventureland」が保存されており、ゲーム画面には「WHAT SHALL I DO?(次はどうする？)」と表示されました。Pfaff氏は「参りましたね。30年も前のことだし、どこまでゲームを進めたのか覚えてません」とコメントしています。

「子どもが見たらNES(海外版ファミリーコンピューター)のマリオでもとんでもなくレトロだと思うけど、明日の朝には『レトロ』の概念が変わるでしょう」という言葉と共に、Pfaff氏はAdventurelandのゲーム画面を投稿。

Pfaff氏の手元には、ほかにも古いフロッピーディスクが残っており……

「Neuromancer」などが発見され、いずれもApple IIeで起動しました。Neuromancerについての投稿では、Apple IIeで再生されるゲーム音楽を聞くこともできます。

また、Pfaff氏の父親が1986年にタイプしたPfaff氏宛の手紙も発見。当時のPfaff氏は11歳で、サマーキャンプに行っていたとのこと。父親は1年前に亡くなったとPfaff氏は語っています。

Pfaff氏は自身の子どもに発見したApple IIeを見せたところ、9歳の子どもは「これがコンピューター？」と不思議がったそうです。そしてフロッピーディスクを指して、「コレは何？」と尋ねたと述べました。
