On May 4, 2024, Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall demonstrated an AI-controlled F-16 fighter jet called 'Vista.' Due to security concerns, only the Associated Press and NBC were allowed to cover the event on the condition that they would not report on the flight until it was completed.
'Not having them is a security risk. At this point, we need them,' Kendall said in an interview after the hour-long flight.
He also said he was very satisfied with Vista and that 'in war, we can leave it up to this learning AI to decide whether or not to use weapons. ' He added that human supervision is necessary when using weapons.
The Associated Press cites a warning from the International Committee of the Red Cross citing 'widespread and serious concerns about entrusting life-and-death decisions to sensors and software. Autonomous weapons are a matter of immediate concern and require an international political response.'
