'Passkey' is a system that uses Bluetooth to authenticate on a different device than the one you are trying to sign in to. Apple started supporting passkeys in iOS 16, released in September 2022. Next, Google will start supporting passkeys on Android and Chrome from October 2022.
In May 2023, Google accounts also support passkeys.
Following this trend, X has also started supporting passkeys. First of all, it is an iOS user living in the United States.
The contents of the FAQ shown by X are as follows.
Q:
Is a passkey required to log in?
A:
We strongly recommend using a passkey to increase the security of your account, but it is not required.
Q:
Can I use a passkey to sign up for a new X account?
A:
No, you cannot sign up using a passkey yet. But stay tuned.
Q:
What devices support passkeys?
A:
Passkey is currently available only to iOS users.
Q:
How can I use my current passkey on all devices?
A:
To use your current passkey on all your devices, make sure you have set up your passkey on your original device. As long as you're logged in to iCloud, your passkeys are automatically synced between your iOS devices using iCloud Keychain. When you log in to iCloud on your new device, you can join the iCloud Keychain associated with your account.
Q:
How is a passkey different from a password?
A:
A passkey acts as an online credential associated with your account. Instead of logging into your account using your username and password, Private Passkey automatically authenticates your account using your public passkey located on our server, so you can log in without entering any information. Passkeys are automatically generated so you don't have to remember login information and are securely backed up for easy recovery.
Q:
What happens if my device is lost or stolen?
A:
Your account remains safe even if your device is lost or stolen. You can also access your account using your password. Passkeys are synced using iCloud Keychain, so you have redundancy if you lose your device. If you lose all your devices, you can recover your passkey through iCloud Keychain Escrow .
Q:
Can I share my passkey with others?
A:
When you sign in to your iCloud account on a new device, that device joins the iCloud Keychain associated with your account. You can't share your passkey with other people unless they're signed in to the same iCloud account. If you want to manage one X account with multiple users, we recommend that you consider using the ' Account Privilege Granting Function '
