'Passkey' authentication becomes default for Google account, further accelerating passwordless authentication

In May 2023, Google began supporting 'passkeys,' which enable account authentication using biometric information such as faces and fingerprints, or PINs instead of passwords. And, starting October 10, 2023, Google announced that it will offer passkeys as a default option on personal Google accounts.

Passkey is a passwordless authentication technology jointly established by the FIDO Alliance, which promotes the passwordless authentication technology FIDO, and the W3C, a web technology standardization organization. You can sync your authentication credentials via the cloud and authenticate your account using facial recognition or fingerprint recognition on your smartphone. Apple, Google, and Microsoft have announced support for passkeys, with Apple introducing passkey support from iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura, and Microsoft from version 22H2 (KB5030310) of Windows 11.

You can check the article below to learn how to actually create a passkey by logging in to your Google account and try passkey authentication on an Android smartphone and iPhone.

Google is making passkeys even more accessible by making them a default option across personal Google accounts on October 10th, which means the next time you sign in to your account, the next time you sign in to your account, you can create a passkey and prompt you to use it to simplify future sign-ins.'

When I actually entered my email address on the Google account login screen, the ``prompt to create and use a passkey'' was not displayed, probably because passkey authentication was not the default at the time of article creation, but I was prompted to enter my password. The condition remained. Click 'Try a different method' in the bottom left.

By selecting 'Use passkey', you can proceed with authentication using passkey.

Also, according to Google, the 'Skip password when possible' option is turned on in your Google Account settings. When I checked 'Security' on the Google account management screen, I found that the 'Skip password when possible' option was turned on.

Google says it is 'encouraging the industry to move to passkeys, making passwords rarer and eventually eliminating them.'
