I compared Meta's high-end VR headset 'Meta Quest Pro' with the lower model 'Meta Quest 2'

Meta

Quest Pro , a stand-alone VR headset high-end model, was released on October 26, 2022. Meta has also released ' Meta Quest 2 ', which is a lower model of Quest Pro, but the price of Quest Pro is about three times that of Quest 2. I was wondering if there was a performance difference as much as the price difference, so I actually compared the Quest Pro and Quest 2.

Quest Pro on the left and Quest 2 on the right.

Quest Pro is black only, Quest 2 is white only. The shape of the visor part of the headset is different, the Quest Pro is shaped like snow goggles and has translucent parts, while the Quest 2 is pure white and box-shaped goggles.

Viewed from above. The Quest Pro has a solid headband made of plastic, while the Quest 2 has a simple rubber band.

If you turn it over and put it side by side, the nose part is very different. Although Quest Pro hides the left and right sides of the face with a light blocking blocker, the area around the nose is still open, but this is because the face tracking function installed in Quest Pro captures the bottom of the face. On the other hand, the Quest 2 has cushions arranged around it, so it is structured so that the gap under the eyes is as small as possible.

The lens is pancake type for Quest Pro and Fresnel type for Quest 2. The Quest 2's lens has concentric grooves, while the Quest Pro's pancake-shaped lens has no grooves. Impression that the size of the lens is one size larger for Quest Pro.

Quest Pro has a headband fixed to the visor part, but Quest 2 is movable and it is possible to change the tilt of the headband as shown in the image below. Both the Quest Pro and Quest 2 have speakers built into the headband.

The Quest Pro weighed 739g with the light shielding blocker on.

Quest 2 is measured at 526g.

A side view of the place where it was actually installed. Impression that Quest Pro has a thinner visor.

Looking from the bottom where it is installed, the Quest Pro is clearly open.

The controller is the Touch Pro VR controller for Quest Pro and the Quest 2 controller for Quest 2. The most noticeable difference is that the Touch Pro VR controller doesn't have the ring part found on the Quest 2 controller.

Where the controllers held in the left hand are arranged. The shape and size of the grip and the position of the buttons have not changed, but the Touch Pro VR Controller has a slightly slanted thumb side of the button panel. The panel of the Quest 2 controller is flat.

The actual weight of the Touch Pro VR controller is 165g.

The Quest 2 controller weighed 150g, including one AA battery.

When you hold the Touch Pro VR controller in your hands, it doesn't look much different than the Quest 2 controller. However, since the thumb part is slanted, the grip comfort is slightly different.

The Quest 2 controller has a ring, but it doesn't really affect the grip. The weight is almost the same as the Touch Pro VR controller. However, since the panel is not tilted, the impression is that it is stable as a place for the thumb. Also, since it has a ring, if you put the ring down when placing it on a desk, it will not roll over, giving it a sense of stability. I felt that this sense of stability when placed was quite important, as I sometimes put the controller on the desk while wearing the headset.

Comparing the scenery seen with the Quest Pro and Quest 2, there was almost no difference in the resolution itself, and there was almost no difference in the beauty of the screen when I actually wore it. However, I felt that the Quest Pro had a wider field of view, probably because the viewing angle was wider.

Below is a movie that actually summarizes the scenery seen from the lobby with Quest 2 and Quest Pro.

The scenery seen from the lobby at Quest 2 is this. It's a small difference, but I got the impression that the Quest 2 has a narrower screen, so the scenery is a little wider.

The scenery seen from the same position in the same lobby with Quest Pro looks like this. The basic UI is exactly the same as Quest 2, so the usability does not change.

However, the Quest Pro has a large gap at the bottom of the visor for face tracking, so the impression is that the amount of light coming in from under the eyes is slightly higher than the Quest 2. Also, depending on the shape of the face, there were times when the headset screen turned off automatically even though I was wearing it, probably because too much light entered. Quest Pro can't adjust the position of the cushion placed on the forehead, so depending on the size and shape of the forehead, the screen may suddenly become dark during use, which may be a little stressful.

In addition, the Quest Pro has more room in the visor than the Quest 2, and the left and right are made of silicon light blocking blockers, making it easier to wear even with glasses on. With the Quest 2, depending on the size of the glasses, it was sometimes difficult to wear them while wearing them, but the Quest Pro was able to wear glasses with a slightly larger width without any problems.

And I played

Resident Evil 4 VR on Quest 2 and Quest Pro to play a game with a little more movement. You can see it played on Quest 2 and Quest Pro in the movie below. As you can see from the movie, there is almost no difference in the quality of the screen, but when you actually play it, the Quest Pro has a wider field of view, so the impression is that the quality of the virtual experience is higher than the Quest 2. There was also a scene to receive.

What I noticed when playing Resident Evil 4 VR, which has a lot of intense action and moves my head greatly, is that the center of gravity and fixation to the head are very different between Quest Pro and Quest 2. The Quest Pro has a balanced weight on the front and back of your head, and the headband holds your head firmly in place, so you don't have to worry about moving your head. On the other hand, the weight of the Quest 2 is concentrated on the front visor, and it is only fixed with a simple rubber band, so I was worried that the headset would shake or move a little when I turned around. rice field. The weight of the Quest Pro is about 200g heavier, but I felt that the Quest 2 felt heavier when worn.

In addition, there was a difference in the sound that I heard. The Quest Pro's built-in speakers have a larger grille than the Quest 2's built-in speakers, and the feeling of being surrounded by sound felt better with the Quest Pro. Of course, there is almost no difference when wearing earphones, but when playing without earphones, Quest Pro can be said to have a more immersive sound.
