The Meta Quest 3S, an MR headset with the same processing performance as the Quest 3 but priced at more than 30,000 yen cheaper, is a recommended headset for VR/MR beginners.

Meta's standalone MR (mixed reality) headset ' Meta Quest 3S ' was released on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. The Quest 3S is a device positioned as a cheaper version of

the Quest 3 , and is equipped with the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and 8GB of RAM as the Quest 3, allowing for a full-color pass-through MR experience. However, it seems that the optical performance specifications have been partially downgraded, so we actually compared it with the Quest 3 to check its usability.

We check out the appearance of the Quest 3S in the article below, comparing it with the Quest 3 and Quest 2.

MR headset 'Meta Quest 3S' photo review that can be obtained from 40,000 yen range, what has changed from Quest 3? - GIGAZINE

According to iFixit, which repairs and disassembles smartphones, the Quest 3S has the same optical components as the Quest 2, such as the Fresnel lens and display, and the depth measurement has been replaced with an infrared (IR) sensor instead of a dedicated depth sensor.

Meta Quest 3S's Fresnel lens turns out to be 100% compatible with Quest 2 - GIGAZINE

The Fresnel lens of the Quest 3S (right) is characterized by concentric grooves, and compared to the pancake lens of the Quest 3 (left), the grooves are inevitably blurred at the edge of the field of view.

In addition, the interpupillary distance (IPD) can be adjusted in three stages: 68mm, 63mm, and 58mm, by directly moving the lens part, just like the Quest 2. Therefore, depending on the person, the IPD may not be suitable and the image may appear slightly blurry.

I tried wearing the Quest 3S while wearing glasses. If the glasses are about 15 cm wide, they are a little cramped, but I can wear them without any problems. However, if the frame is wide or thick, it may be a little difficult to wear them while wearing glasses. In addition, the Quest 3S uses a Fresnel lens, so the lens part is raised, and the Fresnel lens of the Quest 3S may interfere with the lens of the glasses. This problem can be solved by using contact lenses or prescription lenses for Quest 2/Quest 3S sold separately.

The nose pad is the same as the Quest 3, with a gap of about one finger. If you are not using full color passthrough, you can see the surrounding situation to some extent through this gap, but if you want to feel immersed in VR, we recommend using

a silicone face cover sold separately or stuffing it with tissue paper or cloth.

The headset part of the Quest 3S is larger than the Quest 3, but the weight is the same. Therefore, the fit is not very different from the Quest 3, and the center of gravity is not more forward than the Quest 3.

The Quest 3S supports full color pass-through. However, compared to the Quest 3, which has a total of two displays with a resolution of 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye, the Quest 3S, which has a display with a resolution of 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye, still gives the impression of slightly lower image quality. Still, the full color pass-through itself is clear enough that you can read characters of a certain size without any problems. The viewing angle of the Quest 3S is 97 degrees horizontally and 93 degrees vertically, which is slightly narrower than the Quest 3, which has a horizontal resolution of 110 degrees horizontally and a vertical resolution of 96 degrees, but the difference was not noticeable even when using it.

The Quest 3S seemed to have better hand tracking accuracy.

The sensor part of the Quest 3S is different from the Quest 3, with three sets of IR illuminators, RGB pass-through cameras, and tracking cameras on the left and right sides of the front. In addition, two tracking sensors are attached to the bottom side of the Quest 3S. This seems to improve the tracking accuracy of the hands and controllers.

However, the depth sensor that was installed in the Quest 3 has been omitted in the Quest 3S, and instead the IR illuminator on the front measures the depth. Therefore, it took a little longer to sense the inside of the room than the Quest 3. However, since it uses infrared rays, it can sense properly even if the room is a little dark.

I played

the Quest version of VRChat on the Quest 3S. The Quest 3S uses almost the same parts as the Quest 2 for its optical devices, including the display, so compared to the Quest 3, the display has a mesh pattern and the 'screen door effect' is more pronounced. Also, on a screen with vivid colors, the Quest 3S had the impression of more color bleeding than the Quest 3.

After using the Quest 3S for a while, I felt that the MR experience itself was almost the same as the Quest 3. Indeed, when using the Quest 3S after using the Quest 3, you will notice that the image quality and viewing angle are worse. However, if you are playing VR for the first time, you can experience it without any problems with the Quest 3S, and the experience itself will not be significantly impaired even though the optical performance is the same as the Quest 2.

The price of the Quest 3S is 48,400 yen (tax included) for the 128GB model and 64,900 yen (tax included) for the 256GB model. In contrast, the Quest 3 is 81,400 yen (tax included) for the 512GB model. Although the storage capacity of 128GB is a little unreliable for storing large games or large amounts of VR videos, the 128GB model can be purchased for more than 30,000 yen cheaper than the Quest 3. In addition, it is possible to enjoy VR content for PCs by connecting it to a high-performance PC via wired or wireless connection. Therefore, for those who want to experience VR/MR for the first time, it is a recommended device that allows you to experience the latest MR at an affordable price.
