Meta, which develops VR devices such as Quest 2 and Quest Pro, will release ' Meta Quest 3 ' on October 10, 2023. I was curious about how much the Quest 3 has changed from the Quest 2, so I checked out the appearance and feel of the Quest 3 compared to the Quest 2.

A view of the Quest 3 (left) and Quest 2 (right) headsets side by side and viewed from the front. The Quest 3 has a prominent RGB camera and depth sensor on the front, but the Quest 2 only has tracking and pass-through cameras on the four corners, and the design is quite different. Also, the headset size of Quest 3 is slightly smaller.

The inside of the headset is lined up. There is no impression that the size of the eyepiece itself has changed that much.

The Fresnel lens of Quest 2 (right) has concentric steps, but Quest 3 uses a pancake lens and is smooth.

The optical system has been made slimmer by adopting a pancake lens. When you actually line them up, you can clearly see that the visor part of Quest 3 (left) is quite thin.

In Quest 3, the material used for the facial interface cushion that attaches to the face has been changed. The Quest 2 was subject

to a recall due to a problem with the material of the facial interface, and users were provided with a silicone cover free of charge. From this, it appears that the Quest 3 uses a facial interface made of a different material, changing from a urethane sponge-like material to a cushion-like material.

Comparing the bottom side by side.

Quest 3 (left) has a facial interface that is interrupted at the part that hits the nose, whereas Quest 2 (right) has a facial interface on the nose as well. By eliminating the cushion in the nose area of the Quest 3, there is more space in the nose area, and the amount of light that enters the field of vision from outside the goggles increases slightly when worn.

When you wear it and look at it from the side, you can clearly see that Quest 3 (left) is thinner than Quest 2 (right). The weight of the Quest 3 is only about 10 grams heavier, but because the body is thinner, the center of gravity is closer to you than the Quest 2, so the sense of stability when wearing it is not compromised.

Looking from the front, you can see that the visor part of Quest 3 (left) is slightly smaller than Quest 2 (right). However, the nose part of Quest 3 has a much more spacious structure than Quest 2, so depending on the height of your nose, you may find it uncomfortable to sit.

The band part that holds the head is Y-shaped on Quest 3 (left) and I-shaped on Quest 2 (right). Adjusting the length of the horizontal band on Quest 3 was more difficult than on Quest 2, but the Y-shape of the band slightly improves the grip.

The Quest Touch Plus controller that comes with the Quest 3 and the Quest Touch controller that comes with the Quest 2. The Quest Touch Plus controller does not have the circular ring-like sensor that the Quest Touch controller has.

Viewed from the side. The Quest Touch Plus controller is almost the same, except that the control panel is slightly tilted, and the surface texture of the grip button and trigger button is matte unlike the Quest Touch controller. When I actually held it in my hand, I didn't feel that it had changed much in terms of comfort.

The battery box has been improved to make it a little easier to insert AA batteries in the Quest Touch Plus controller.

By eliminating the round ring-like tracking sensor, the Quest Touch Plus controller is approximately 17% lighter than the Quest Touch controller. However, in actual use, when I wanted to put the controller on the desk for a while, I was able to use the tracking sensor to place the controller in a very stable state, which was quite convenient, but the Quest Touch Plus Since this is no longer possible with a controller, I am no longer able to place the controller stably, which is a bit of a pain.
