Summary of how to use CLOVA Note, an AI voice recognition app made by LINE that can instantly perform tedious transcription tasks



When

recording an interview or creating meeting minutes, it is necessary to listen to the recorded audio and transcribe it, but listening to it by hand and transcribing it from scratch is a very time-consuming task. The voice recognition app ' CLOVA Note ' developed by LINE Corporation is said to be able to transcribe using the power of AI, so I actually tried using it to check the transcription procedure and accuracy.

CLOVA Note is available for iOS , Android , and browsers , and requires a LINE account to use. This time, we will use the iOS and browser versions.

◆1: Installation and initial settings for CLOVA Note for iOS
First, search for CLOVA Note in the App Store and tap 'Get.'



Next, authenticate with Touch ID or Face ID to proceed with the installation.



Once the installation is complete, tap 'Open' to launch CLOVA Note.



When you first launch the app, you will be asked for permission to track. This time, I selected 'Ask the app not to track me.'



Next, log in with your LINE account. This time, I tapped the green login button to log in using the LINE app.



LINE will start automatically and the authentication screen will appear, so tap 'Allow'.



Next, read the terms of use and privacy policy carefully, check the blue box, and tap 'Agree.' At this time, if you select 'Data acquisition for quality improvement,' the audio file upload limit will increase from 300 minutes per month to 600 minutes per month.



When you return to the CLOVA Note screen, a message will appear informing you that permission to access the microphone is required, so tap 'Confirm'.



When asked for permission to send notifications, tap 'Allow'.



Next, you will be asked for permission to access the microphone, so tap 'OK'.



When the screen for selecting your field of interest appears, select one and tap 'Confirm.' In this example, I selected 'IT/Science.' This completes the installation and initial settings.



◆2: How to use the CLOVA Note app
CLOVA Note allows you to transcribe audio files into units called 'notes.' To create a new note, tap the + sign at the bottom of the screen.



You can then choose how to create the note from 'audio recording' or 'uploading an audio file.' In this example, I chose 'audio recording.'



The following screen will then be displayed, so record the audio you want to transcribe. When you're done recording, tap the stop button at the bottom left of the screen.



When the confirmation screen for ending recording appears, tap 'Yes'.



Next, select the type of audio. I selected 'Personal Memo' this time.



Next, you will be asked how many people are in the recording. In this case, tap '1 person' and then tap 'Confirm.'



Once you have selected the number of people, the AI will begin conversion, so wait until it is complete.



Once the conversion is complete, the transcribed text will be displayed. This time, I read out the end of

the review article for 'RETO Ultra wide & slim' , and it was transcribed quite faithfully except that the 'subject' became 'flying car body'.

After trying out various subjects from day to night, I found that while it was capable of taking photos with a retro feel outdoors during the day, it struggled with dark locations such as indoors and at night.

When taking photos with a smartphone or digital camera, you can instantly check the photos you've taken, but you tend to take multiple photos to improve their quality or upload them to social media immediately, which means you tend to focus on the photos themselves rather than the experience at hand. On the other hand, with a film camera, there's no way to check the quality of the photos, so once you've taken the required number of photos, you can focus on the next thing. This allows you to focus on your goals, such as eating or sightseeing, rather than on photography, and before you know it, you've walked 20,000 steps in half a day during this shoot.



And here is the result of the transcription using CLOVA Note. I have bolded the parts where there were typos. There were only a few typos, so it is still usable if you want to review the conversation later.

This allows me to concentrate on my main objectives, such as eating and sightseeing, rather than on photography, and before I knew it, I was walking through 20,000 trees in half light during this shoot.



You can freely change the title of the note.



Additionally, if you tap on the text in the note, the audio for that part will be played.



Tap the pencil icon in the upper right corner of the screen...



You can edit the text.



Also, if you tap the magnifying glass icon ...


You can search within the text for any word.



When you tap the menu button...



You can change the font size and download audio recordings (transcribed text).



◆3: How to use the browser version of CLOVA Note
To use the browser version of CLOVA Note, first go to

the CLOVA Note official website and click 'Start CLOVA Note.'



Next, you will be asked to log in with your LINE account. This time, I clicked on 'QR code login.'



Then a QR code for logging in will be displayed ...



Scan the QR code with the QR code reader built into the LINE app on your smartphone.



Next, tap 'Login' on the smartphone screen.



Then a four-digit authentication number will be displayed in the browser.



Enter the 4-digit authentication number on the authentication screen on your smartphone and tap 'Verify Identity.'



Once identity verification is complete, tap OK.



You can now use CLOVA Note from your browser.



In the browser version of CLOVA Note, you can transcribe by clicking 'Create a new note' in the upper left corner of the screen. However, the browser version of CLOVA Note does not have an audio recording function and only supports uploading audio files.



◆4: Linking the app version of CLOVA Note and the browser version of CLOVA Note
By running both the app and the browser version of CLOVA Note at the same time, you can record with the app version of CLOVA Note and take notes with the browser version of CLOVA Note. If you start recording with the app version of CLOVA Note while the browser version of CLOVA Note is open...



A new note with the words 'Recording with smartphone app' will appear in the browser version of CLOVA Note. Clicking this will...



The memo entry screen will be displayed. If you enter a memo on this screen, the time you enter the memo will also be recorded.



Once you stop recording and the transcription is complete, the transcript and notes will be displayed side by side like this. If you take notes of important points during a long interview or meeting, it will be easier to view the transcript later.



You can also view your notes in the CLOVA Note app, but since it is not possible to display the transcribed text and notes at the same time, the browser version is more suitable for viewing the notes while checking them against the text.



When I actually tried using CLOVA Note, I was able to transcribe audio without any complicated settings, as long as I logged in with my LINE account. The transcription accuracy was quite high, and it was good enough that I could use it as is for purposes such as minutes without editing. However, the app version has limitations such as the hassle of viewing notes and the inability to record in the browser version, so I recommend using the app version for recording and the browser version for viewing.

At the time of writing, CLOVA Note is in beta and can transcribe unlimited audio recordings during the beta period. On the other hand, when uploading files, you can upload up to 300 minutes per month in the standard state, and up to 600 minutes per month if you allow 'data acquisition for quality improvement.'
