I tried using ASUS's modified high-end smartphone 'Zenfone 8 Flip' equipped with a rotating camera & completely bezel-less

ASUS

Snapdragon 888- equipped high-end smartphones ' Zenfone 8 ' and ' Zenfone 8 Flip ' will be available in Japan from August 20th (Friday). Among them, 'Zenfone 8 Flip' has a very unique body equipped with a camera that rotates 180 degrees. I actually touched such 'Zenfone 8 Flip' and checked the appearance and function while comparing it with 'Zenfone 8'.

◆ Opening & appearance confirmation
The package of 'Zenfone 8 Flip' is made of paper. 'Zenfone 8 Flip' is available in two colors, Galactic Black and Glaceon Silver, and this time we will use Galactic Black.

When you remove the lid, a small box containing accessories will appear.

When I took out the small box, there was a 'Zenfone 8 Flip' body under it.

The package contained the 'Zenfone 8 Flip' body, a special cover, a USB cable with USB Type-C on both ends, a charging adapter, instructions, and tools for taking out the SIM card slot.

'Zenfone 8 Flip' is wrapped in an easily removable film.

When you remove the film, it looks like this. There is no camera on the surface, and the display is spread over the entire surface. The display uses organic EL, and the resolution is 2400 x 1080 pixels. In addition, tempered glass '

Gorilla Glass 6 ' is used on the surface of the display.

Three cameras are mounted on the back side. The material of the lens is 'Gorilla Glass 3'.

The back side is mirror-finished for a smooth feel.

The main camera has 64 million pixels, the wide-angle camera has 12 million pixels, and the telephoto camera has 8 million pixels.

Since the camera part rotates 180 degrees, you can take pictures with three cameras even when taking a selfie.

On the right side, there are customizable 'smart keys' and volume control buttons.

There is a SIM card & microSD card slot on the left side.

Two nanoSIM standard SIM cards and up to 2TB microSD card can be inserted into 'Zenfone 8 Flip' at the same time.

On the top, you can see the hinge part of the rotating camera.

The bottom is equipped with a USB Type-C connector for charging and communication.

The dimensions of 'Zenfone 8 Flip' are about 165 mm in height x 77.2 mm in width x 9.6 mm in depth.

If you put it side by side with the 'iPhone 12 Pro Max ' with a height of 160.8 mm, a width of 78.1 mm, and a depth of 7.4 mm, you can see that the 'Zenfone 8 Flip' is vertically longer.

The width is almost the same as 'iPhone 12 Pro Max'.

When weighed, it was 231g.

'Zenfone 8 Flip' comes with a special case that snaps into place.

If you attach a special case, the protrusion of the camera part will be eased, so the camera will not be easily scratched even if you place it on a desk or floor. In addition, the surface of the case is anti-slip processed, so it felt easier to hold it with the case attached.

The weight with the case attached is 257g.

It looks like this when you hold it in your hand. Since the body of 'Zenfone 8 Flip' is large, I could operate it more smoothly with both hands than with one hand.

◆ In-screen fingerprint authentication & face authentication
'Zenfone 8 Flip' supports unlocking using in-screen fingerprint authentication and face authentication. Each authentication can be set by opening the Settings app, selecting 'Security & Screen Lock' and following the onscreen instructions.

With in-screen fingerprint authentication, you can unlock by touching the red frame on the screen. When I actually registered my fingerprint and tried the authentication speed, I was able to unlock it within 1 second after touching the red frame part.

If you press the smart key mounted on the right side and then swipe the screen upward, the camera will rotate 180 degrees with Vienna and face recognition will be performed. In the following movie, you can see how face recognition is actually performed with the rotary camera.

It is necessary to remove the mask when registering the face, but once the registration was completed, the lock could be unlocked even while wearing the mask. However, I couldn't recognize my face in a dark place, so I had to use other unlocking methods such as fingerprint impression and PIN code.

◆ Performance comparison of 'Zenfone 8 Flip' and 'Zenfone 8'
In order to compare the performance of 'Zenfone 8 Flip' and 'Zenfone 8' both equipped with the high-end SoC Snapdragon 888, I ran a benchmark with the standard benchmark application 'Geekbench 5'. In addition, 'Zenfone 8 Flip' has two specifications of 'storage 128GB: memory 8GB' and 'storage 256GB: memory 8GB', and this time we are using the one of 'storage 256GB: memory 8GB'. Also, the comparison target 'Zenfone 8' is 'storage 256GB: memory 16GB'.

Looking at the results of the CPU benchmark, the single core score of 'Zenfone 8 Flip' was 1124 and the multi-core score was 3639, which was a little higher than 'Zenfone 8'.

However, the OpenCL score is 4687 for 'Zenfone 8 Flip' and 4755 for 'Zenfone 8', which is higher for 'Zenfone 8'.

As for Vulcan's score, 'Zenfone 8 Flip' was 5819, 'Zenfone 8' was 5854, and 'Zenfone 8' was higher. However, the score difference between the two is within two digits in all the benchmarks executed this time, and it can be said that there is almost no difference in performance.

You can see that 'Zenfone 8 Flip' does not have a camera on the screen side, and it can display information to the very limit of the screen compared to 'Zenfone 8' which has a punch hole type camera.

When I displayed the same article of GIGAZINE on 'Zenfone 8 Flip' and 'Zenfone 8', I confirmed that 'Zenfone 8 Flip' can display more information at once.

◆ Confirmation of camera performance
'Zenfone 8 Flip' is equipped with three cameras: a main camera with 64 million pixels, a camera for wide-angle shooting with 12 million pixels, and a camera for telephoto shooting with 8 million pixels, and tap the icon in the red frame. You can switch the camera used for shooting. This time, I took pictures with the auto setting and checked the performance of each camera.

First, take a picture of a roadside tree with a wide-angle camera. The composition is such that a bright sky and dark trees enter the screen, but it automatically switches to HDR mode, and I was able to reproduce the details of clouds and the pattern of wood grain. Also, if you look at the surrounding buildings, you can see that the straight line can be reproduced as a straight line without bending despite the ultra-wide-angle shooting.

Below is a photo taken with the main camera from the same position. The power of the 64 million pixel sensor is demonstrated, and the resolution is such that the leaves can be distinguished one by one.

Below is an image taken with a telephoto camera from the same position. The resolution is lower than that of a wide-angle camera or main camera, but you can take beautiful pictures for recording.

'Zenfone 8 Flip' can also digitally zoom up to 12x. Below is a photo taken from the same position as the above photo with 12x digital zoom. You can shoot a subject far away, but the roughness is really noticeable.

The main camera and wide-angle shooting camera of 'Zenfone 8 Flip' are the same as those installed in 'Zenfone 8', but the camera for telephoto shooting is installed only in 'Zenfone 8 Flip'. Thanks to this telephoto camera, even if you want to shoot the following flowerpots on the opposite bank of the river ...

You can take clear zoom photos without moving from the spot.

Also, there are creatures such as pigeons and cats that run away when approaching ...

You can shoot clearly from a distance. Equipped with a telephoto camera, you have more chances to take a picture.

Like 'Zenfone 8', 'Zenfone 8 Flip' is also equipped with a night view mode, which makes it possible to take bright pictures by amplifying a slight amount of light even in a dark environment. However, the night view mode was not compatible with the telephoto camera, and only the wide-angle camera and main camera could be used.

The biggest feature of 'Zenfone 8 Flip' is that it is equipped with a rotating camera. In general smartphones, the image quality of the front camera for selfies is often lower than that of the back camera, but with 'Zenfone 8 Flip' it is possible to use the same camera as normal shooting for selfies, so it is overwhelming. High-quality selfies are possible.

There are various ways to operate the rotary camera, and there are various uses. In the article below, you can find a detailed review of the Zenfone 8 Flip rotary camera.

'Zenfone 8 Flip' has a full movie shooting function, and you can shoot 4K / 60fps and 8K / 30fps movies.

The 8K movie actually shot with 'Zenfone 8 Flip' is as follows. If you check the movie, you can see that the ripples of water and the pattern of stones are clearly recorded.

◆ Summary
When I actually used the 'Zenfone 8 Flip', it was a smartphone full of gadget feeling that had a very unique aircraft equipped with a rotating camera and high performance by Snapdragon 888. In addition, since storage can be expanded with a maximum of 2TB microSD, it is possible to install a large number of large-capacity game apps and shoot high-resolution 8K movies without worrying about the remaining storage capacity. However, since the earphone jack and waterproof function installed in 'Zenfone 8' are omitted in 'Zenfone 8 Flip', 'Zenfone 8' for those who 'want a high-performance and compact waterproof smartphone', 'Zenfone 8 Flip' is recommended for those who 'like the gadget feeling of a rotating camera!' And 'want to enjoy games and movies on a large smartphone'.

The 'Zenfone 8 Flip' is scheduled to appear in Japan from August 20, 2021 (Friday), with 'Storage 128GB: Memory 8GB' for 86,800 yen and 'Storage 256GB: Memory 8GB' for 96,800 yen. In addition, you can check the review of 'Zenfone 8' released on the same day in the following article.
