「無料でWindows VistaやXPからWindows 10にアップグレードできる」というウワサの真相は？

2015年7月にリリースされる予定のWindows 10は、Windows 7・Windows 8.1などから無料でアップグレード可能となっていますが、「Windows 7・Windows 8.1を搭載していないPCでもテクニカルプレビュー版を利用していれば無料アップデートが利用できる」とも読める文章をMicrosoftがブログに投稿したとして話題になっていました。本当にWindows 7や8.1を搭載していないPCでもアップグレードが無料なのか、その真相が明らかになっています。

ITニュースサイトのArs Technicaは「Insider Previewの最新ビルド『10130』を利用している人は7月29日にリリースされる最終ビルドと、そこから続くリリース版を利用できるようになる」と報道。「Microsoftアカウント(MSA)に登録したPCでWindows 10のテクニカルプレビュー版であるInsider Previewを利用している人はWindows 7・Windows 8.1を利用していなくても無料でアップデートできる」「ただし最低システム要件を満たす必要がある」などと大きな話題となりました。Ars Technicaは「これまでのMicrosoft Windowsとは全く異なるアプローチですが、Microsoftの新しい試みだろう」という見方をし、WinBetaは「テスト参加者たちに向けての感謝の気持ち」だと見ていました。

しかし、Microsoftはその後、しれっとブログの文面を変更。WinBetaによると、最初、Microsoftブログには以下のような文言が書き込まれていました。

変更された点は、「Insider Preview参加者はWindows 10の最終リリースビルドを受け取り、アクティベートし続けることが可能」となっていたのが、「最終リリースビルドを受け取ることが可能」となっており、最後に「重要な点はWindows 7やWindows 8.1を利用している人々だけが無料アップデート可能であることです」という文章が付け足されたこと。

また、ブログを書いたMicrosoftのGabriel Aulさんと一般ユーザーのやりとりからも、Microsoftの意図するところは「Windows 10をクリーンインストールしてしまった場合も、MSAを登録したPCである限りダウングレードすることなくWindows 10に無料アップグレード可能」だったと見られており、やはりWindows VistaやWindows XPからはInsider Program参加者でも無料アップデートはできないようです。
