Spotify has announced it will introduce an 'AI Persona' badge and exclude profiles that 'do not represent real people' from its recommendations.

Spotify, the music and podcast streaming service, has announced that it will display an 'AI Persona' badge on profiles of non-existent artists generated by AI. The aim is to verify the identity and protect the credibility of the artists, and the feature will be introduced from mid-September 2026.

Since around 2024, Spotify has been reporting the distribution of 'AI-generated music disguised as artist tracks,' with concerns raised about the use of titles and album art that mimic the releases of real artists. However, since a certain number of people in the music scene enjoy AI-generated music, Spotify announced in May 2026 that instead of completely banning AI-generated content, it would implement 'Verified by Spotify,' which would only grant permission to content created by humans who have passed a review process.

In launching Verified by Spotify, Spotify stated that 'in the age of AI, being able to trust the authenticity of the music you listen to is more important than ever.' However, the Verified by Spotify badge only indicates that an artist is verified; the absence of the badge does not mean that the artist is not human, nor does it allow you to distinguish AI-generated music. Spotify has stated that 'we have received clear feedback from listeners about the discomfort they feel when they see an artist's profile that looks human, only to find out that it is actually an AI-generated image.'
Therefore, on August 11, 2026, Spotify announced the introduction of a new label: the 'AI Persona' badge.
The AI Persona badge informs users that an artist's identity is AI-generated and not that of a real person. In addition to artist profiles that explicitly state they are AI personas, the badge will also be applied to related profiles.
Additionally, music by artists with assigned AI personas is not included in algorithm-generated recommendations by default. If you follow an artist with an AI persona, their music will appear in personalized recommendations.
AI persona badges can be awarded by AI artists themselves, or they can be awarded by Spotify after it has reviewed the profile and determined whether the name, image, etc., are AI-generated. Users can distinguish between 'AI personas self-declared by the artist' and 'AI personas reviewed by Spotify' by touching the badge. If a badge is awarded after review, the artist will be notified and given the opportunity to self-declare or appeal. In addition, a feature that allows users to report artists they suspect of being AI personas to the review team is also planned to be available in the next few months.

Spotify has stated that AI personas are an evaluation of an artist's profile and are unrelated to how the music is generated. For example, at its Q2 earnings announcement on August 4, 2026, Spotify announced the release of a new product that will allow music fans to use AI to create covers and remixes of artists' songs, with the artist's consent. However, since this will not be done by fake artists, the AI persona badge will not be awarded, and the revenue will be returned to the participating artists.
Spotify stated, 'A true artist-fan connection is built on a foundation of trust and integrity. In music, listeners need to be able to trust that the artist behind the music is the person they claim to be. And in the age of generative AI, that is more important than ever. We believe that all artists should be free to choose how they express themselves, but Spotify's programming is focused on elevating the music of genuine artists who are making a career in the music industry.'
AI personas will be available for self-declaration through Spotify for Artists starting August 11, 2026, and the badge itself is scheduled to be displayed from September.
