Finally, HDR video playback functionality is planned for the Windows version of Firefox.

The beta version of Firefox 153 now includes a feature to play HDR videos on Windows. If development proceeds smoothly, the official version of Firefox 153, scheduled for release on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 (local time), will also include HDR video playback functionality.

HDR videos can now be shot with smartphone cameras, and HDR videos are being uploaded to personal YouTube channels. However, the Windows version of Firefox did not support HDR video playback, and YouTube automatically played SDR videos with limited brightness. With this update, the Windows version of Firefox will finally be able to play bright HDR videos.
Firefox's support for HDR videos varies depending on the operating system. While Firefox 100, released in May 2022, supported HDR video playback on macOS, support for Windows lagged behind.
Approximately four years after support for macOS, in January 2026, testing of HDR video playback in Windows environments began with Firefox Nightly 148, and the HDR video playback function was included in Firefox 153.0 beta, which was released on June 17, 2026. Firefox development follows a process of 'testing experimental features in Nightly versions, then moving to beta testing once stable, and finally releasing officially,' so unless major problems are found, HDR video playback functionality will be included in Firefox 153.

According to the Firefox 153.0 beta release notes, HDR videos can be played on environments that meet the following conditions: 'Windows 10 and Windows 11,' 'AMD or NVIDIA GPU,' and 'HDR-compatible display.' On the other hand, 'notebooks with Intel and NVIDIA processors' are not supported for HDR. Also, Firefox has an issue where HDR videos appear brighter compared to browsers like Edge and Chrome, and this is planned to be improved in future releases.
In conjunction with the addition of HDR video playback support to the Windows version of Firefox, Mozilla's graphics development team has published a technical explanation article on HDR video playback. Furthermore, the development team has indicated their intention to expand HDR support not only to videos but also to 'photos,' 'apps,' 'games,' and 'general web content.'
