Gemini has been introduced to Google Translate's text processing, enabling more natural translations and allowing you to listen to real-time translations with headphones

It has been announced that Google Translate will introduce cutting-edge text translation quality developed by Gemini. In addition, a beta version of a feature that allows users to listen to real-time translations using headphones will also be launched.
Google Translate gets new Gemini AI translation models

According to Rose Yao, vice president of product and search at Google, the addition of advanced Gemini features to Google Translate will improve translation of phrases such as idioms, local expressions, and slang more effectively.
For example, the phrase 'stealing my thunder' would previously be translated word for word as 'stealing my thunder,' but now it will be translated as an idiomatic phrase as 'stole my credit.' This is because Gemini will correctly determine that this is an idiomatic phrase by analyzing the context, making it easier to get a more natural and accurate translation.

The update will be available in approximately 20 languages, including English, Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German, in the United States and India starting December 12, 2025 (local time). The update will cover the web version, Android app, and iOS app. It's unclear when the service will be expanded.
In addition, based on Gemini's real-time translation function, Google Translate will add a beta version of a feature that allows users to listen to real-time translation results using headphones.
This feature maintains the speaker's tone, intonation, and rhythm to achieve natural translation and also makes it clear who is speaking. It is expected to be useful for conversations in other languages, listening to lectures in foreign languages, and watching movies and TV shows. Additionally, the language learning tools within the translation app are now available in approximately 20 countries and regions, including Germany, India, Sweden, and Taiwan.
