'Google Pixel Buds Pro 2' review: A completely wireless earphone that combines noise canceling performance and high sound quality with a stable fit, recommended for beginners

Google released the Pixel Buds Pro 2, a wireless earphone with active noise canceling function, on September 26, 2024. The Pixel Buds Pro 2, which is equipped with Google's proprietary chip 'Tensor A1' and has twice the active noise canceling function from the previous model '

Pixel Buds Pro ', was delivered to the GIGAZINE editorial department, so we actually tried wearing it and checked its sound quality, comfort, and noise canceling performance.

This time, I will connect the Pixel Buds Pro 2 to the Pixel 9. Registering the Pixel Buds Pro 2 is easy; just open the charging case of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 right next to the Pixel 9.

Pixel Buds Pro 2 will appear on the Pixel 9 screen, so tap 'Connect.'

Tap 'Continue'.

You'll be asked to allow the Pixel Buds app to access your Pixel Buds Pro 2, so select 'Allow.'

Tap 'Skip' and you can set up your AI assistant later.

When I opened 'Connection Settings' from 'Settings', I confirmed that Pixel Buds Pro 2 was connected as a media device. Tap the settings icon.

The device details screen shows the name of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and the battery level of each earbud. Active noise control can be switched between three patterns: 'Noise Canceling', 'OFF', and 'External Sound Capture'.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 is the first to feature Google's proprietary 'Tensor A1' chip, which Google claims has doubled the active noise canceling performance of the previous model. So, I actually checked the noise canceling performance of the Pixel Buds Pro 2.

This time, we compared the Pixel Buds Pro 2 (left) with the AirPods Pro 2 (right), which our editorial staff normally use.

When I tried on the Pixel Buds Pro 2, I felt that they fit my ears well. The weight of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 earphones is 4.7g per ear with the medium-sized ear tips attached, which is slightly lighter than the 5.3g AirPods Pro, and there is no sense of a foreign body when wearing them. The earphones can be easily fixed in place by twisting them around the arch to fit them in your ears, and their compact size means that they don't put pressure on your ears and cause pain when worn for long periods of time.

When I put on the AirPods Pro 2 after putting on the Pixel Buds Pro 2, I felt that the AirPods Pro 2 did not fit my ears as well. The AirPods Pro 2 insert the ear tips into the ear canal and fix the shape of the main body to the recess of the ear, so if you wear them for a long time, they put pressure on your ears, which can cause pain or fatigue for some people. In addition, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 is still more stable when worn.

We also had an editorial staff member who used the previous model, the Pixel Buds Pro, try them out, and he commented that the fit is much better than the previous model, and because they're lighter, the discomfort when wearing them is greatly reduced.

Next, we tried wearing them under an air conditioner or a vent fan and turned on active noise cancellation, and the Pixel Buds Pro 2 seemed to have slightly better noise cancellation. With the AirPods Pro 2, you could faintly hear the sound of the vent fan, but with the Pixel Buds Pro 2, the sound of the vent fan was almost completely gone. An editorial staff member who used the previous model commented, 'The fit and noise cancellation performance have clearly improved. You can no longer hear the sound of the vent fan, and it's much quieter when you wear it than the previous model.'

Next, when comparing the external sound capture, there was almost no difference between the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and the AirPods Pro 2. External sound capture uses a microphone built into the earphones to collect and play surrounding sounds, so depending on the earphones, the sounds of air conditioners and ventilation fans tend to be amplified and become loud. However, both the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and the AirPods Pro 2 sounded so natural that it was hard to believe I was listening to the surrounding sounds through earphones, and I was able to hear people's conversations smoothly.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 allows you to use gestures to adjust the volume, switch active noise control, play/pause, and answer phone calls. Whereas the AirPods Pro 2 requires you to click a button built into the stick at the bottom of the earphones, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 only requires you to touch the surface marked with the letter 'G.' In particular, the ability to adjust the volume by 'swiping back and forth' felt quite easy to use. However, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 felt like it had a lag of about 0.3 seconds between the operation and the reaction, making it seem a little slower than the AirPods Pro 2.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 is said to be equipped with an 11mm dynamic speaker driver, so the bass is solid, but compared to the AirPods Pro 2, the treble sounds more grainy. However, it is not a so-called 'boom and bang'

sound , but rather the bass, midrange, and treble sounds seem to resonate in a well-balanced way. After listening to various songs on YouTube Music and Spotify, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 can be evaluated as a wireless earphone that can enjoy music with high sound quality.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 supports 'Find My Device' just like the previous model. In addition, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 has a built-in speaker in the charging case, so you can find the earphones by making a sound even when they are stored in the charging case. Select 'Pixel Buds Pro 2' in 'Find My Device'.

If you tap 'Play a sound,' the charging case will make a sound, so you can quickly find it when you forget where you put it.

Below is a video of the sound actually coming from the Pixel Buds Pro 2.

When active noise canceling is on, the battery performance of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 is said to be up to 8 hours of music playback time with the earphones alone, and up to 30 hours in total when used with the charging case. Wearing them for 8 hours continuously puts a lot of strain on the ears, but when I actually wore them for a day, I felt that the Pixel Buds Pro 2 caused less ear fatigue. As expected, the earphones are light and compact, so I get the impression that they put less stress on the ears. The fixing arch allows you to hook them firmly onto your ears, so even if you run, jump, or move your neck vigorously, there is little risk of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 falling out of your ears. The noise canceling performance is high and the sound quality is also high enough, so I felt that these earphones are highly recommended even for people who have never used noise-canceling wireless earphones before.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 is available for purchase from the official Google store for 36,800 yen (tax included).
