Nintendo profit plunges 55% as sales of its aging Switch console fall
According to the document, Nintendo's sales for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2024 were 461,341 million yen, up 50% from the same period last year, but for the same period in 2025, they were 246,638 million yen, down 46.5% from the same period last year. Similarly, operating profit for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2025 was 54,510 million yen, down 70.6% from the same period last year, and ordinary profit was 113,469 million yen, down 55.3% from the same period last year.
According to Nintendo, 'Paper Mario RPG,' released in May 2024, sold 1.76 million copies, and 'Luigi's Mansion 2,' released in June 2024, sold 1.19 million copies, so while they got off to a good start, 'The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom' exerted strong influence in 2023, and as a result, Nintendo Switch sales were 2.1 million units, a decrease of 46.4% compared to the same period last year, and software sales were 30.64 million units, a decrease of 41.3% compared to the same period last year.
Sales of packaged downloadable software also decreased, falling 32.6% year-on-year to 80.7 billion yen.

In light of these results, Nintendo stated that it aims to increase the popularity of Nintendo Switch from 'one per household' to 'multiple switches per household' and then to 'one switch per person.' It also stated that it plans to maximize sales by continuing to offer unique proposals so that more users will continue to play Nintendo Switch for a long time.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has said that the company plans to officially announce the successor to the Nintendo Switch this fiscal year (by March 2025).
