Links created with Google's URL shortening service 'URL Shortener' will no longer be usable on August 25, 2025

Google has been offering the URL shortening service '

Google URL Shortener ' since 2009, but the service will be discontinued on March 30, 2019. On July 18, 2024, Google announced that links created using Google URL Shortener will become unusable after August 25, 2025.

URL shortening services are often used when entering URLs with a relatively large number of characters in situations where the number of characters that can be entered is limited, such as X (formerly Twitter) and text messages (SMS), and Google has been providing the Google URL Shortener service since December 2009. A distinctive feature of Google URL Shortener is that the domain of the shortened URL is set to 'goo.gl'.

However, on April 1, 2018, Google announced that it would shut down the Google URL Shortener on March 30, 2019. At the same time, it announced that it would gradually transition to

Firebase Dynamic Links .

Google then announced that 'it's time to shut down the Google URL Shortener service' on July 18, 2024, and that links with the 'goo.gl' domain set will no longer respond after August 25, 2025.

According to Google, when you open an existing 'goo.gl' link after August 23, 2024, a certain percentage of the time, an interstitial page like the one shown below will be displayed before the target page opens. The percentage of interstitial pages displayed will increase as the service comes to an end, and if there are use cases that cannot be used due to the display of interstitial pages, the display of interstitial pages can be suppressed by adding the query parameter 'si=1' to existing 'goo.gl' links.

'We recommend migrating your goo.gl links as soon as possible, as interstitial pages may not work properly with

302 redirects or embedded social metadata,' Google said.

In addition, Firebase Dynamic Links, which Google recommended migrating to as of 2018, has also announced that it will be discontinued on August 25, 2025, just like Google URL Shortener.
