Reports that X is blocking links to encrypted messaging service Signal

Journalist Matt Binder reports that X has banned links to the domain 'signal.me' used by the encrypted messaging service 'Signal,' making it impossible to post the relevant URL.

According to Binder, when trying to post the relevant URL, an error message appears saying, 'The link in question has been identified as potentially harmful by X and its partners and cannot be posted.'

Similarly, DM also fails with the message 'Message could not be sent.'

There are also cases where posts are blocked with the message 'This may be an automated post.'

It has also been made impossible to add a link to Signal on the profile page, as it is 'considered to be malware.'

In addition, when users try to access links to Signal that have already been posted, they are prompted with a warning that says 'This link may not be secure' and are prompted to go back to the original page, and the only way to access the link is through a small link written below the warning, Binder reports.

It's not clear when links to Signal began to be blocked, but it's likely a recent change, as people were previously able to post links or link to them from their profiles.

Binder said Signal has been a useful tool for federal government officials to contact journalists in recent weeks to let them know what DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) members are doing with their access to agency data. For now, only links to 'signal.me' on Signal are blocked, and other domains such as 'signal.org' are not blocked. Similarly, encrypted messaging services such as 'Telegram' are not blocked.

By the way, when a member of the news site The Verge tried it, he was blocked in the same way, but when I tried it in my own environment, I was able to post a link to 'signal.me', so it seems that the block is not being carried out worldwide.
