The sitelink search box is a search function announced by Google on September 8, 2014, which allows you to easily perform a ' site:search ' from the search results page. For example, if you search for 'GIGAZINE' in Google search, a link to GIGAZINE will be displayed at the top of the search results page, and below that will be a search box where you can search for information within GIGAZINE. This search box is the sitelink search box.

However, due to declining usage of this sitelink search box, Google has announced that it will phase out the sitelink search box on November 21, 2024 in order to simplify search result pages.

This change will be applied globally to all search results, in all languages and countries. It will not affect rankings or other sitelink visuals, and it will not appear in the Search Status Dashboard. Once the sitelink search box is no longer visible in search, your Rich Results report will be removed from Google Search Console and your markup will no longer be highlighted in the Rich Results Test .

You can also remove the sitelink search box structured data from your site, but Google explains that you do not need to remove it. Google explained that the reason you do not need to remove it is because 'unsupported structured data does not cause problems in search and does not cause errors in the Search Console report.' If you remove the sitelink search box structured data, please note that the site name also uses a variation of the website structured data .

As Google leans more toward AI, it is restructuring the team responsible for search-related functions and has just replaced the head of its search and advertising division.
