Netflix announces it will discontinue its 'Basic' plan in Canada and the UK on July 13, 2024

Netflix has previously offered plans such as 'Standard with Ads,' 'Basic,' 'Standard,' and 'Premium,' but new applications for the Basic plan were closed in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada in July 2023. Netflix's basic plan is available for $11 per month (990 yen in Japan). This plan allows you to watch content in HD quality on one device at a time, and is the cheapest plan without ads.

This basic plan has been

closed to new and re-enrollees in the United States and the United Kingdom since July 2023, and similar measures have been introduced in several other countries, including Japan, since October 2023.

With the abolition of the basic plan, existing basic plan subscribers will be forced to switch plans. At the time of writing, Netflix offers three plans : ad-supported standard for $6.99 (approx. 1,130 yen) per month, standard for $15.49 (approx. 2,500 yen) per month, and premium for $22.99 (approx. 3,700 yen) per month. Netflix is seeing an increase in subscribers to its ad-supported standard plan, with the number of monthly active users of the ad-supported standard plan expanding from 5 million to 40 million in one year, and it has been reported that in countries where the plan is offered, approximately 40% of all subscribers choose the ad-supported standard plan.

Netflix did not disclose when it would discontinue the basic plan in countries including the United States and Japan.
