On March 3, 2024, a Spirit Airlines flight scheduled to depart from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was canceled, and checked baggage was to be returned to passengers on the terminal's conveyor belt. However, college student Paola Garcia's baggage never made it onto the conveyor belt.

Garcia's suitcase, which contained valuables such as a MacBook, an Apple Watch, an iPad, jewelry, and luxury brand clothing, was returned after two hours of waiting. When Garcia told a Spirit Airlines employee about this, the employee asked for his address so that the luggage could be sent to his home.

Garcia gave the address to a Spirit Airlines employee and went home, but the next morning, when he checked the signal from the Apple Watch in his suitcase using the Find My app, he found that the Apple Watch was not in the airport but in a nearby house. Garcia suspected that someone had stolen his luggage, and since he needed his MacBook immediately for a university test, he went directly to the address where the Apple Watch was.

When Garcia arrived at the address where the Apple Watch signal was coming from, she noticed several suitcases scattered around the house. Garcia, who thought it was suspicious, took videos and photos of the scene and called the police.

After investigating the occupants of the house, the

Broward County Sheriff's Office in Florida identified a man named Junior Geneus Basile as the likely culprit. Basile worked for Paradies Lagardère Travel Retail, a retail and restaurant chain at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and was at the airport on the day Garcia's luggage went missing.

Surveillance footage obtained by law enforcement as part of the investigation showed Basile rummaging through a suitcase believed to belong to Garcia.

Basile removed his MacBook and other valuables and placed them in a separate bag, then placed his suitcase in a clear bag, which was then left behind at the back of the store where Basile worked.

By the time deputies arrived at his house, the contents of the suitcase had already been disposed of, but he was arrested and charged with grand larceny. He maintains his innocence and is scheduled to appear in court on August 23rd.

In response to an interview with local news outlet Local 10 News, Spirit Airlines said, 'To date, there is no evidence that Spirit employees were involved in this incident, but as a courtesy, we have issued a reimbursement check to the customer. We take these allegations seriously and are investigating the matter.'

A spokesperson for Paradies Lagardère Travel Retail, where Basile worked, released the following statement: 'We take this matter very seriously. The employee was terminated as soon as we became aware of the incident. The police investigation is currently ongoing and we are cooperating with them. For more information, we encourage you to contact the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.'

The police report doesn't explain how Basile managed to get away with the suitcase, but Garcia said, 'I personally believe it's not just Basile who is stealing at the airport, but a group of people. One person can't take a bag by themselves,' and suggested there may have been multiple thefts.
