According to the sheriff's office, the culprit was tracked down to a woman living in California. The woman had previously had a package stolen from her post office box, so she came up with the idea of mailing a package containing an AirTag to herself. When she put it into action, the package was stolen as planned.

The woman contacted the sheriff's office, who used the AirTag information to pinpoint the suspect's location and arrested a 27-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man about 16 miles from the post office. In addition to the AirTag-containing packages, the pair were found to be in possession of items believed to have been stolen from more than a dozen other victims.

Both men were booked into jail on charges of possession of fraudulent checks, theft of credit cards and conspiracy.

The sheriff's office commended the victims of mail theft for contacting law enforcement authorities rather than trying to contact the suspects themselves.

As such, AirTags are useful for searching for belongings, and there have been reports of them successfully solving lost baggage cases and pinpointing the locations of thieves.

However, AirTags are equipped with features to prevent stalking , so there is a chance that a thief may be aware of an unknown AirTag nearby. In Japan, there have been reports of AirTags hidden in cars being thrown away after theft.
