AirTag, a lost item tracker developed by Apple, uses a network of hundreds of millions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices around the world to identify the location of lost items.

Although AirTag is very convenient, there have been many reports of using it for criminal activities such as stalking, deviating from its original usage of tracking lost items.

According to the San Antonio Police Department in Texas, the owner of the pickup truck stolen on March 29, 2023 local time tracked the vehicle using AirTag and fired at the suspect in the vehicle.

San Antonio police received a report of the stolen car around 1:00 pm on the same day and started an investigation, but the owner was able to identify the location of the vehicle before the police. The owner contacted the thief without waiting for the police. It's unclear exactly what happened, but it was reported that the thief pulled out a firearm and the owner turned it on and shot him dead.

It is unclear if the owner will be prosecuted in the matter, and investigations are underway to determine whether the thief had a weapon in the first place.

A spokeswoman for the San Antonio Police Department said, 'I know it's frustrating, but please don't try to take matters into your own hands.'

Attempts to uncover wrongdoing using AirTag have been made so far, and it has also been reported that when the AirTag was hidden in the baggage to prevent lost baggage, the lie of the airline company was exposed.

In February 2023, it was reported that a car thief could also be tracked with an AirTag, but this time the vehicle was wrecked during a car chase with the police. In 2022, a story was reported about a man who chased a motorcycle thief, who broke his nose after being hit back by the thief.

There have also been reports of vehicles being recovered without violence.
