In the run-up to the US presidential election in November 2024, the camps of incumbent President Joe Biden, who is seeking reelection, and former President Donald Trump, who is seeking to retake the presidency, are intensifying their online election campaign. In particular, former President Trump, who was banned from major social media platforms following the 2021 Capitol Hill attack, is making extensive use of Truth Social, which he launched, in his election campaign. In the midst of this, new statistics have been released showing that Truth Social is facing an uphill battle in attracting users.

According to Similarweb, a company that develops access analysis tools, the number of daily visitors to Truth Social in the United States in May 2024 was down more than 21% compared to April and more than 35% compared to March.

Additionally, Truth Social's average monthly visitor count from May 2023 to April 2024 was just over 4 million, a 39% decrease compared to the year prior to April 2023, highlighting the fact that many users were leaving the platform in the roughly two years since its launch.

Below is a chart showing the trend in the number of daily active users of Truth Social in the U.S. The number increased from the beginning of 2024 to the end of March, but fell to the level at the beginning of the year by mid-May.

Trump Media, which operates Truth Social, claims that it does not measure metrics related to the usage of Truth Social. When asked about the survey results by CNBC, the foreign media outlet, they responded by saying, 'A fake news network is reporting fake analysis, so why should we comment on it?'

Trump Media's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also reveal that the company relies entirely on advertising for its revenue, and that declining user engagement could lead to advertisers abandoning Truth Social, putting its business at risk.

In March 2024, the number of users temporarily recovered after Trump Media went public, and Similarweb reported that the number of active users of the mobile version of Truth Social increased by about 58% from February to March. Another market research firm, GWS Magnify, reported that the number of monthly users of Truth Social reached a new peak in March, growing to about 1.4 million, and that the momentum continued into April.

Below is the trend in the total monthly access numbers for the desktop and mobile versions of Truth Social in the United States. Founded in October 2021, Truth Social saw a steady increase in the number of users for about half a year after the official launch of its service in February 2022, but since then, the number of users has been on a downward trend, with ups and downs. Since then, it has shown signs of picking up again in 2024.

On the other hand, GWS Magnify points out that 'Truth Social faces two problems that are hindering it from building a dedicated user base. The first is retention , or user retention. According to the company's research, Truth Social's users check the site less than two days a week, lagging behind apps such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, TikTok, Reddit, and Pinterest.

The second problem is that it has not differentiated itself from competing microblogs such as X, which have similar specifications. CNBC commented that Truth Social's most unique feature is that Trump himself posts information.

'Compared to other social media platforms, Truth Social users visit the app much less frequently and for much shorter periods of time,' GWS Magnify CEO Paul Carter told CNBC.
