According to CNBC, Amazon plans to introduce a more natural conversational Alexa, positioning Alexa to compete with OpenAI and Google's chatbots.

To cover the increased costs of using generative AI, the new Alexa will be offered as a subscription service, which will be separate from the existing Amazon Prime subscription.

Amazon declined to comment when contacted by CNBC.

CNBC points out that 'Amazon unveiled Alexa in 2014 and wowed many consumers with its ability to handle voice tasks, but in the wake of recent leaps in artificial intelligence, its capabilities may feel outdated.'

For example, OpenAI's 'GPT-4o' is capable of much deeper two-way conversations than Alexa.

In addition to Gemini, Google has also announced Project Astra (Astra), an AI assistant that answers questions using video and audio, and is preparing for its official release.

According to CNBC, some are interpreting these announcements as a threat to Alexa and Apple's Siri.

It has been reported that a paid version of Alexa, 'Alexa Plus,' is in development for January 2024. Since Alexa Plus is also said to be 'capable of natural conversation,' some believe that the 'Alexa upgrade' reported by CNBC this time is the same as this Alexa Plus. Alexa Plus is 'scheduled to be released by June 30, 2024.'
