Piper Sandler's research has been conducted since 2001 and has surveyed more than 250,000 young people, collecting more than 61 million data points on teen spending.

The survey involved 6,020 young people, with an average age of 16.1 years old. 54% were male, 44% were female, and 2% were non-binary. 43% lived in the South, 28% in the Midwest, 19% in the West, and 9% in the Northeast. Approximately 38% of participants worked part-time, and the average household income was $66,280 per year.

According to the survey, the most frequently used shopping site for buying clothes and shoes was Amazon, with 55% of respondents choosing it, followed by SHEIN (12%), NIKE (6%), GOAT (2%), and Temu (2%).

The number one favorite brand for both clothing and shoes is Nike. In particular, it received overwhelming support for shoes at 59%, far ahead of second-place Adidas (7%) and third-place Converse (7%). It also received high support for clothing at 34%, followed by American Eagle (6%) and lululemon (5%) in second and third place, respectively.

When it comes to handbags, the most popular brand is Coach (23%), followed by Louis Vuitton (10%).

However, the amount of spending on fashion itself is on a downward trend among young people overall, and high-income women in particular appear to be in a particularly slump, with spending on apparel down 13% year-on-year, spending on shoes down 3%, and spending on accessories down 21%.

On the other hand, there is a lot of effort being put into beauty, which has continued to grow since the spring 2018 survey and is now at an all-time high.

The most popular stores are Sephora (37%), Ulta (31%), Target (10%), Amazon (5%), and Walmart (5%).

The most popular cosmetics brand was elf (38%), far ahead of the second-placed brands, followed by Rare Beauty (9%), Maybelline (6%), Charlotte Tilbury (5%), and Fenty Beauty (4%).

The ranking of popular skin care brands is as follows: 1st place CaraVe (38%), 2nd place The Ordinary (9%), 3rd place La Roche-Posay (6%), 4th place Cetaphil (5%), and 5th place Glow Recipe (3%).

The ranking of perfume brand popularity was: 1st Bath & Body Works (29%), 2nd Sol de Janeiro (17%), 3rd Victoria's Secret (11%), 4th Ariana Grande (5%), and 5th Dior (4%).

Among technology streaming sites, Netflix was the most popular with 29%, followed closely by YouTube and YouTube TV with 27%, and Hulu in third place with 8%.

The most popular smartphone is the iPhone, with 85% of respondents owning one. In addition, 86% of respondents said that their next device will be the iPhone.

In addition, the most popular SNS was TikTok with 35%, followed by Instagram with 30% and Snapchat with 22%. TikTok's popularity has slightly decreased, while Instagram is showing signs of recovery, suggesting that preferences are shifting slightly.

The ranking of most popular influencers is as follows: 1st place is YouTuber Mr. Beast, 2nd place is TikTok personality Alix Earle, 3rd place is rapper Kanye West, 4th place is rapper Drake, and 5th place is YouTuber Kai Cenat.

And the VR device ownership rate was 33%, up 2 points from 31% in the fall 2023 survey. Weekly usage also improved by 3 points from 10% to 13% in the fall of 2023. It is unclear what VR content is attracting young people, but one of the reasons for the success of Meta Quest 3 may be its acceptance by the younger generation.
