How fast is 10G SFP +? Wi-Fi 6 compatible router ASUS 'RT-AX89X' I tried using & speed measurement review



The high-performance router ' RT-AX89X ' equipped with an

SFP + port that supports high-speed wired communication at a maximum of 10 Gbps and also supports high-speed wireless communication by Wi-Fi 6 appeared from ASUS on February 12, 2021. .. I actually used RT-AX89X to measure the communication speed and tried useful functions.

The package of RT-AX89X looks like this.



When you open the lid, the RT-AX89X main unit will appear.

The RT-AX89X is equipped with eight foldable antennas.



When all the antennas are deployed, it looks like this.



Three rubber pads are mounted on the back side, providing excellent stability.



Several types of ports and LED indicators are arranged on the side of the RT-AX89X. The LED indicators indicate SFP +, 10G, LAN, WAN, 5GHz, 2.4GHz, and power on / off in order from the left.



It also has a WPS button, LED on / off button, and Wi-Fi on / off button.



Eight LAN ports that support communication at 1 Gbps are installed.

In order to try 10Gbps communication with SFP +, we prepared the SFP + module '

AT-SP10SR ' and the optical fiber cable of OM3 .



Use the prepared cable to build a LAN with RT-AX89X and two PCs. By measuring the communication speed between PCs connected in this state, you can check the wired communication speed via RT-AX89X. The PC is equipped with the SFP + card '

MCX312B-XCCT '.



The result of measuring the communication speed using '

iperf ' looks like this. The transmission speed: 9.42Gbit / sec and the reception speed: 9.40Gbit / sec, which are close to the theoretical values, were recorded.



Next, let's check the actual specifications when connecting via Wi-Fi. When I built a wireless LAN with ac standard using '

Let'snote CF-SV9 ' compatible with Wi-Fi 6, both transmission speed and reception speed were recorded as 618 Mbit / sec.



Then, when I built a wireless LAN with the ax standard, both the transmission speed and the reception speed were recorded as 786 Mbit / sec.



Finally, using the open source

SDR ' HackRF ', I observed the wireless communication of RT-AX89X at 5GHz.



The figure below shows the radio spectrum when communicating with iperf. By observing the waveform, you can see that the radio bandwidth of about 80MHz from about 5250MHz to about 5330MHz is used for communication. In addition, although the

specification of RT-AX89X states that the maximum bandwidth is 80 MHz, when I contacted ASUS, I got the answer that 'I am proceeding with support for 160 MHz', so I will update the firmware in the future. It may support the maximum bandwidth of Wi-Fi 6 at 160MHz.



◆ Communication speed in the real environment
Let's measure the communication speed when the RT-AX89X is actually connected to the Internet. As a measurement environment, we will use '10 Giga Course' of

eo Hikari contracted with GIGAZINE.



First, connect the RT-AX89X to the WAN port (maximum 1 Gbps) from the terminal device, connect the RT-AX89X and the PC with SFP +, and measure the communication speed.



As a result of measuring the download speed with

Fast.com , the maximum value of 1.0 Gbps was recorded.



Next, the result of measuring the communication speed with the speed test service '

speed.cloudflare.com ' provided by Cloudflare looks like this. The download speed is 467Mbps and the upload speed is 555Mbps.



Finally, when I measured the communication speed with '

Speedtest.net ', the result was that the download speed was 920.80 Mbps and the upload speed was 340.03 Mbps.



Next, connect the terminal device to the WAN / LAN port that supports 10 Gbps and measure the communication speed.



Fast.com has a download speed of 2.6 Gbps, which is more than 1 Gbps.



The measurement results at speed.cloudflare.com show that the download speed is 629 Mbps and the upload speed is 628 Mbps.



The measurement results on Speedtest.net show that the download speed is 1312.88 Mbps and the upload speed is 1361.66 Mbps, both of which exceed 1 Gbps.



Finally, connect the terminal device to the WAN / LAN port that supports 10 Gbps, and measure the wireless communication speed when the Let'snote CF-SV9 and RT-AX89X are connected using the ax standard. The download speed on Fast.com was recorded as 590Mbps.



The measurement result at speed.cloudflare.com is that the download speed is 492 Mbps and the upload is 637 Mbps.



Speedtest.net measured download speeds of 693.15 Mbps and upload speeds of 456.88 Mbps.



◆ Easily build mesh Wi-Fi using AiMesh
The RT-AX89X is equipped with the network construction support function '

AiMesh '. By using this function, you can easily build mesh Wi-Fi between routers equipped with AiMesh. This time, I tried to build mesh Wi-Fi using AiMesh with RT-AX89X as the master unit and RT-AC68U as the slave unit.

First, update the firmware of both routers and initialize the router (RT-AC68U) that will be the slave unit. Next, log in to the management screen of the router (RT-AX89X) that will be the parent device, and click 'AiMesh Node' and then 'Search'.



When you click RT-AC68U displayed in the search results ...



A confirmation dialog will be displayed, so click 'Apply'.



Wait a few minutes as the mesh Wi-Fi build will start automatically.



When the construction is completed, the router installation method and connection method will be displayed, so click 'OK' to complete the setting.



When the setting is completed, the connected router is displayed in the AiMesh column of the management screen.



In addition, AiMesh automatically recognizes the connection between routers even if you switch from wireless to wired, so I will actually try it. First, connect the LAN cable to the LAN port of RT-AX89X.



Next, connect the LAN cable to the WAN port of RT-AC68U and the connection is completed.



When the connection is completed, mesh Wi-Fi with the wired connection as the uplink is automatically built.



◆ Summary
When I actually used the RT-AX89X, it was a router that could easily realize wired communication at several Gbps and could build a complicated network such as mesh Wi-Fi with just a few clicks. Also, since it is equipped with an SFP + port, which is rare for consumer routers, it is recommended for people who are particular about stable internet connection.
