You could say Legend of the Galactic Heroes to Japanese is like Star Wars to Americans in a way. The novel gave some strong impact on subcultures, and doubtlessly opened the age of light novel.
This novel in 10 volumes was published from 1982 to 1987. To this date, the novel has sold more than 15 million copies in total through multiple pubishers, excluding comics, games and other spinouts.
Also to be told is the gorgeousness of its anime adaption. Judging by present standards, it's not an overstatement to say that the anime had the "Dream Team" of voice actors. The novel is adapted into a surprising 162 episodes of OVAs and three anime movies.
Which part of the story is to be adapted, or who is going to be in the play is not announced yet. Not to disappoint old fans, it will be a tough work.
