I tried 'Banh Mi,' a Vietnamese dish recommended by Vietnamese people living in Japan. It's a hearty sandwich with plenty of vegetables and meat in a crispy bun.

Banh mi is a popular Vietnamese sandwich, consisting of bread filled with plenty of vegetables and meat. I had the opportunity to go to Tokyo for

an event , so I visited ' Banh Mi Sandwich Suidobashi,' a famous banh mi shop that was trending on X (a Japanese social networking site), and tried both banh mi and pho.

Banh Mi Sandwich Suidobashi branch is located on the east side of Suidobashi Station.

Arrived at Suidobashi Station. Exiting from the East Exit.

After a short walk, I arrived at Banh Mi Sandwich Suidobashi branch. Look for the red sign.

The menu looks like this. Banh mi and pho are the main dishes, and there are also set menus.

They also seem to offer condensed milk coffee, pork salad noodles, and bun bo (spicy noodle dish).

A touch-panel ticket vending machine is installed at the entrance of the store. This time, I chose the regular size of 'Saigon Ham & Pork Pate' (790 yen including tax).

You can choose from 'no chili sauce,' 'chili sauce,' or 'sweet and spicy chili sauce,' and you can also choose the amount of cilantro from 'include,' 'no cilantro,' or 'less.' This time, I chose 'chili sauce' and 'include' for the cilantro.

I also ordered the regular size 'Beef Pho' (1200 yen including tax). You can choose the amount of cilantro in the pho, so I chose 'add'.

Once your meal ticket is issued, you enter the restaurant and wait until a seat becomes available. I visited around 12:30 PM on a Saturday, and it took about 15 minutes from buying my ticket to being seated.

As soon as I sat down, the banh mi and pho were served.

This is banh mi. 'Banh mi' is apparently a Vietnamese word for bread in general. It's a long, narrow bread with a slit cut down the middle, and it's filled with plenty of radish, carrots, and cilantro.

The regular size was served cut in half.

The inside of the bread is coated with chili sauce.

This is what the cross-section looks like. Hidden beneath the vegetables, there was plenty of pork inside. The bread was so hard on the outside that it made a 'crunching' sound, but the hard layer was thin, and the inside was soft. The daikon radish and carrots were seasoned like a sweet pickled vegetable dish, with a vinegary acidity that wasn't too sour, which was great. The pickled vegetable-style seasoning and the pork, which resembled char siu, were quite familiar flavors, so I felt that the dish as a whole would suit the Japanese palate. I especially enjoyed the satisfying crunch of the bread, and it made me want to try variations with different fillings. You can adjust the amount of cilantro, so even people who don't like cilantro can enjoy it.

I'll try the beef pho too.

This soup is packed with the rich flavors of meat and vegetables, and has a subtle hint of star anise.

The pho noodles have a soft texture. The generous amount of bean sprouts adds a nice crunchy touch, which is a great bonus.

It was filled with plenty of tenderly stewed beef. The beef had absorbed the soup, and the soup oozed out with every bite.

A bottle of garlic chili vinegar was placed on the table.

This garlic chili vinegar has a very strong, spicy flavor. Even a small amount will make the entire pho dish spicy. Even our editor, who is a huge fan of spicy food, found that two teaspoons was enough; it's an extremely spicy condiment.

Banh Mi Sandwich Suidobashi offers both dine-in and takeout options. You can also order through Uber Eats.
