Google is expected to announce a new Gemini model at Google I/O 2026 in May 2026, which will have GPT-5.5 level performance but will not be as good as Mythos.



Google will hold its developer conference, ' Google I/O, ' starting on May 19, 2026. Ahead of the conference, a new pop-up called 'Gemini Spark BETA' has appeared on the web version of Gemini, leading to speculation that a new Gemini model will be announced at Google I/O.

Gemini Spark is in an experimental stage and is designed to ask for permission before performing sensitive operations, but it may share personal information or make purchases without permission, so users are warned not to rely on Gemini Spark for professional advice.

Furthermore, a more specific model name, 'Spark Robin V1.1 Fast,' has also been confirmed.




A key point of Gemini Spark is the use of the word 'skill' in its description. It seems intended to be more than just a simple chat or coding AI; it's designed to fit into the skill and template framework that competitors are adopting. Furthermore, it states, 'By using Gemini as your everyday AI agent, you can get 24/7 support for everything from processing your inbox to online tasks,' and its always-on positioning puts it directly in competition with AI agent platforms from Anthropic and OpenAI.

According to Alex Heath, author of the AI development competition newsletter 'Sources,' the new Gemini, which may be announced at Google I/O, will have performance comparable to OpenAI's GPT-5.5 , which was released in April 2026. However, it is expected to fall short of Anthropic's ' Claude Mythos Preview ,' which is only available to select organizations due to its high cyberattack capabilities.

Google I/O will be held from May 19th to 20th, 2026, local time. It will start at 2:00 AM on the 20th in Japan time, and announcements are expected regarding Gemini, as well as updates to the cross-reality OS 'Android XR' and smart glasses that support it.
