A Chinese automaker has established mass production technology for sodium-ion batteries for electric vehicles that can be fully charged in 11 minutes and have a range of 450 km.

Chinese company Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) has announced that it has established mass production technology for sodium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs).
Sodium-ion EV battery delivers 11-min charging and 450 km range
BAIC is an automobile manufacturer founded in 1958, producing and selling SUVs, sedans, and off-road vehicles. They also produce electric vehicles such as the 'EU5' and 'EU5 PLUS.'

On March 19, 2026, BAIC announced that it had established mass production technology for sodium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). This battery can travel 450km on a single charge and can be fully charged in just 11 minutes using fast charging technology. Furthermore, it has a wide operating temperature range of -40 to 60 degrees Celsius and can maintain 92% of its performance even in low-temperature environments of -20 degrees Celsius.

Sodium-ion batteries are attracting attention because they can be produced at a lower cost compared to lithium-ion batteries, generate less heat, and can be charged quickly. In February 2026, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), another Chinese company, announced its sodium-ion battery and revealed plans to release an EV equipped with a sodium-ion battery in cooperation with Changan Automobile within 2026.
