The world's first EV equipped with a sodium-ion battery has a range of over 400km and maintains 90% of its performance even in winter

It has been revealed that Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) has teamed up with automaker Changan Automobile to release the world's first mass-produced electric vehicle equipped with a sodium-ion battery within 2026.

Gao Huan, CTO of CATL's China EV business, said, 'Just as they introduced EVs many years ago, Changan Automobile has the commitment and strategic foresight for energy security and is once again leading the industry with the development of sodium-ion technology. CATL values the opportunity to work with an industry leader and will fully support their strategy and pool our expertise to bring safe and reliable sodium-ion technology to market.'

CATL's sodium-ion battery 'Naxtra' achieves an energy density of up to 175Wh/kg, enabling an electric-only driving range of over 400km. Further advances in the sodium-ion supply chain are expected to increase the range to 300km-400km for hybrid vehicles and 500km-600km for pure electric vehicles.

It has been pointed out that EVs experience a decline in performance in extremely cold environments, but the unique feature of 'Naxtra' is that it delivers approximately three times the output of a lithium-ion iron phosphate battery under the same conditions even at -30°C, while maintaining over 90% of its capacity even at -40°C, and achieving stable power supply even at -50°C.
Even when tested under harsh conditions such as crushing, drilling, and sawing, Naxtra was able to supply power without emitting smoke or catching fire.
It will first be installed in the Changan Qiyuan A06 sedan, and will then be rolled out to other Changan Automobile models.
It will be interesting to see if Naxtra really performs as claimed by users in western and northeastern China, which are known for their harsh environments for EVs.
