OpenAI announced that it will begin testing advertising on January 16, 2026, for users aged 18 and over using the free version and ChatGPT Go in the United States. Ads will only be displayed to users of the free version and the cheapest paid plan, ChatGPT Go. They will not be displayed to users with higher-level accounts, such as ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro, or the corporate versions ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise. ChatGPT ads will display sponsored products and services related to the conversation below the answers. Ads will be clearly distinguished from answers, allowing users to see why they are being shown an ad or to dismiss any ad and explain their reasons. The company also hinted that in the future, users may be able to directly ask questions necessary to make a purchasing decision while viewing the ad.

Regarding ChatGPT advertising, OpenAI explained that the minimum contract amount was $200,000 (approximately 30 million yen), but advertising media Adweek reported that advertisers were offered amounts lower than $200,000, making it clear that it is expected that ads will be able to be displayed for less than $200,000.

It has been revealed that this first ChatGPT advertisement has already begun to appear on some users' accounts.

The first ChatGPT ad update was reported by Tibor Blaho, lead engineer at AIPRM , in the public beta version of the ChatGPT Android app (version 1.2026.027). A similar update was later discovered in the web version of ChatGPT.

According to Blaho, ChatGPT's advertising emphasizes that 'ads do not influence ChatGPT responses' and that 'chats remain private.' ChatGPT also has an ad history, which includes details of ads viewed or interacted with (opened, clicked, or hidden), and can be checked at any time. As users interact with ads, their interests are saved, and this information is used to personalize future ads. Users can turn personalized ads on or off at will. Furthermore, advertisers do not monitor users' personal information or conversations with ChatGPT. If personalized ads are disabled, ads will still be displayed based on their conversations with ChatGPT, but they may be less relevant than when they are enabled. Users will also have the option to permanently delete their ad history and user interest data for personalized ads.

Blaho also posted a screenshot of the notification screen for users about the ads, which first explains that 'ads do not affect ChatGPT's answers.'

It then emphasizes that user data privacy will be maintained, stating that advertisers will not monitor users' personal information or conversations with ChatGPT.

In addition, OpenAI has added an item called 'Ads controls' to ChatGPT settings.

Regarding ChatGPT's advertising, OpenAI explains, 'Our mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. Our advertising activities always support this mission and make AI more accessible.'
