Review of the simple, compact keyboard 'HHKB Professional Classic Type-S' that uses the top-of-the-line Type-S key

PFU's luxury keyboard brand 'Happy Hacking Keyboard (HHKB)' released the ' HHKB Professional Classic Type-S, ' a USB Type-C connection-only model that uses the same 'Type-S' key structure as the top model, on October 21, 2025.

The packaging for the HHKB Professional Classic Type-S looks like this.

When you open it, you'll see the HHKB Professional Classic Type-S body. The HHKB Professional Classic Type-S comes in three colors: black, white, and snow. The color we were provided with this time was snow.

The contents include the HHKB Professional Classic Type-S itself, an instruction manual, safety precautions, and a USB-C cable for connection.

The size is 294mm wide x 110mm deep x 40mm thick. The HHKB Professional Classic Type-S comes in two layouts: Japanese and English. The keyboard provided to us this time was the Japanese layout (JIS 69 keys), with a notable feature of having arrow keys on the bottom right.

The actual key pitch is approximately 19mm.

The keystroke is 3.8mm.

The keys are capacitive non-contact type, employing the same 'Type-S' key structure as the higher-end model of HHKB, and are said to be quiet. When you actually type on the keys, the keystrokes feel smooth and sink in, and the built-in spring provides a moderate bounce, giving you a firm sense of 'you're definitely typing,' allowing for quick and accurate input. The number of keys has been reduced, making the keyboard quite compact, but the keys are not narrow, making it easy to type. You can see what kind of sound is produced when you actually type by watching the video below.

The back looks like this.

When you remove the cover, you will see six DIP switches.

By flipping these DIP switches, you can change the keyboard mode and control key assignments. The DIP switch mapping table is written on a sticker on the back. You can also change key assignments using

The legs can be adjusted to three different tilt positions.

The maximum tilt is about 15 degrees.

The second stage is about 10 degrees.

When the legs are folded, the tilt is approximately 8 degrees.

The included USB-C cable was approximately 0.9m long.

The HHKB Professional Classic Type-S is priced at 31,900 yen (tax included). It features the same key touch as the higher-end model, a compact design, wired connectivity for enhanced functionality, and a simple, easy-to-use design. Since you can experience the key touch of the top-of-the-line model at a more reasonable price, I felt it was worth trying it out. At the time of writing, it was available for purchase on Amazon.co.jp for 29,800 yen.
