At the time of writing, the Lightning port that Apple has equipped the iPhone and iPad with is being replaced with a USB-C port. However, devices equipped with Lightning ports are still in active use, and the 'Lightning - Digital AV Adapter' that can output video to HDMI-equipped TVs and projectors via the Lightning port is useful in some places.
The Lightning Digital AV Adapter has an SoC inside that runs a very simple version of iOS, and because Lightning doesn't have the bandwidth to send HDMI, Apple uses the SoC to decompress the compressed video coming from the device and send it over Lightning.
