Netflix raises prices again, subscription fees up to 16%

In a letter to investors published on January 21, 2025 (PDF file) , Netflix announced that it would revise its pricing in the United States, Canada, Argentina, and Portugal starting that day.
As a result, the 'Standard Plan with Ads' will increase from $6.99 (about 1,086 yen) to $7.99 (about 1,242 yen) per month, the 'Standard Plan' without ads will increase from $15.49 (about 2,408 yen) to $17.99 (about 2,796 yen) per month, and the most expensive 'Premium Plan' will increase from $22.99 (about 3,574 yen) to $24.99 (about 3,885 yen) per month.

This pricing review marks the first price increase for the ad-supported plan introduced in 2022.
In a statement to investors, Netflix said, 'We will continue to invest in programming to bring more value to our members, but we may ask members to pay a small fee to reinvest in making Netflix better.'
The document also showed that the company expects to add 19 million paid subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2024, bringing the number of subscribers to 302 million as of 2024, which will result in a 16% increase in annual revenue and operating profits exceeding $10 billion (approximately 1.554 trillion yen) for the first time in its history.
Regarding its outlook for 2025, Netflix wrote, 'We are optimistic as we enter the new year, with the return of our biggest shows in 2025: Squid Game, Wednesday and Stranger Things.'
At the time of writing, it is unclear how this price increase and new plan will affect services in Japan.
