Silicon Motion is developing an SSD controller compatible with PCIe 6.0

In addition to the flash memory that stores data, SSDs also have a controller that determines how to handle the data. It has become clear that Silicon Motion, one of the developers of SSD controllers, is developing a controller that supports PCIe 6.0.

The SSD controller is responsible for determining how data is written to the flash memory and for correcting data errors, and the performance of the controller has a significant impact on the data transfer speed and stability of the SSD. Silicon Motion is already mass-producing controllers that support PCIe 5.0 and have been adopted in multiple SSDs.

Silicon Motion CEO Wallace C. Kou recently spoke to China Flash Market and revealed that the company is developing a controller for PCIe 6.0 SSDs. The model number of the PCIe 6.0 controller is 'SM8466' and will be produced using a 4nm semiconductor manufacturing process.

The maximum transfer speed of PCIe 6.0 is 256GB/s, which is double that of PCIe 5.0. Therefore, PCIe 6.0 SSDs are expected to have significantly faster data transfer speeds than PCIe 5.0 SSDs.
