Disney removes transgender content from Pixar original animation 'Win or Lose'

Pixar's original animation ' Win or Lose ' will be distributed on Disney's streaming service, Disney +, from February 2025. Initially, 'Win or Lose' was planned to include a story about transgender people, but The Hollywood Reporter reported that Disney removed that part.

'Win or Lose,' which will be available on Disney+ from February 2025, depicts a co-ed middle school softball team called the Pickles as they fight their way to the finals of a tournament. 'Win or Lose' will consist of eight episodes, with each episode focusing on the off-field lives of the characters, including players, parents, coaches, and umpires.

When contacted by The Hollywood Reporter, a Disney spokesperson confirmed that the transgender element had been removed from 'Win or Lose.' 'When it comes to animated content aimed at younger audiences, we recognize that many parents want to discuss certain themes with their children on their own terms and timelines,' the Disney spokesperson said.

A transgender character will remain in 'Win or Lose,' but lines about gender identity will be cut. A source close to the project said Pixar changed its transgender policy several months ago. Disney declined to comment further on the details.

This is not the first time that Disney has removed transgender or LGBTQ+ stories before a film was released. In 2022, the passage of the Don't Say Gay bill in Florida sparked a debate about gender identity in the United States. Disney released the Toy Story spin-off film Buzz Lightyear in June 2022, which sparked controversy due to its homosexual content. In addition, Strange World , released in November 2022, also contained homosexual content, and both films performed poorly at the box office. LGBTQ+ content faces problems in certain international markets, which could lead to countries imposing stricter age restrictions or banning the content altogether.

Disney denied that the episode had been banned, claiming that it had only been postponed. Furthermore, they explained that the reason for the delay in the episode's release was not because it featured a transgender character.
