Intel to stop using Intel 20A process node for 'Arrow Lake' to save 700 million yen

Intel has revealed that it will not adopt the Intel 20A process node for its next consumer processor, 'Arrow Lake,' but will instead use an external partner's process. According to CFO David Zinsner, the move will result in cost savings of $500 million (approximately 72 billion yen) by focusing resources on the 18A process node, an improved version of the 20A process node.

Intel reported the completion of development of the new process node 'Intel 20A' and its improved version 'Intel 18A' in March 2023. 'Development completed' means that specifications, requirements, performance targets, materials, etc. have been determined, but it does not mean that it can be put into practical use immediately.

20A and 18A are the final two of five process nodes outlined in Intel's 'Roadmap to 2025' released in 2021, which CEO Pat Gelsinger described as the 'Angstrom era.'

However, while there were multiple inquiries for the 18A process node product, there was only one planned for the 20A process node product, pointed out the news site ExtremeTech. In addition, Intel announced that it would record a significant deficit in the second quarter of 2024 and would lay off 15,000 employees, the largest in its 56-year history, and was required to make significant cost cuts.

CFO David Zinsner explained at the Citi Global TMT Conference that the decision to forgo the 20A process node was aimed at reducing capital expenditures and spending.

Instead, Arrow Lake will use a process node from an 'external partner.' Intel has not revealed the name of the specific partner, but ExtremeTech predicted that Arrow Lake will be manufactured by TSMC, since the notebook processor 'Luna Lake,' which uses the Lion Cove architecture for the P core and the Skymont architecture for the E core like Arrow Lake, uses the TSMC 3nm process node.

The engineering resources allocated to 20A are shifting to 18A, and products using the 18A process node are expected to appear in 2025.
