Finally, Intel starts mass production with 3nm equivalent process rule 'Intel 3'



Intel has reported that it has begun mass production of its 'Intel 3' process. Semiconductors manufactured using the Intel 3 process are said to have 18% improved processing performance per watt compared to the previous generation Intel 4.

Intel used to name its semiconductor process rules with the naming convention 'Intel XX nm', such as 'Intel 14 nm' and 'Intel 10 nm', but in 2021 it announced new naming conventions such as 'Intel 7', 'Intel 4', 'Intel 3', and 'Intel 20A'. According to Intel, the process rule that Intel called 10 nm in-house is equivalent to other companies' 7 nm, and the process rule that Intel called 7 nm is equivalent to other companies' 4 nm and 3 nm. In other words, Intel changed the naming convention to match rival companies such as TSMC, such as 'other companies' 7 nm equivalent process rule is Intel 7' and 'other companies' 3 nm equivalent process rule is Intel 3'.

Intel has set a goal of 'developing five process nodes in four years (5N4Y)' in 2021, and mass production of Intel 7 and Intel 4 has already begun. In addition, Intel will deploy semiconductor manufacturing lines corresponding to Intel 3 at its factories in Oregon and Ireland, and will complete test production by the end of 2023. Now, Intel has reported that it has begun mass production of Intel 3 at both factories.

According to Intel, Intel 3 semiconductors offer 18% better processing performance per watt than Intel 4 semiconductors.



Intel is also developing Intel 3T, which will provide through-silicon vias to combine multiple components into one, Intel 3E, which will add I/O for external interfaces, and Intel 3PT, which is based on Intel 3E and also adds through-silicon vias.
