Discovered by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, the feature sets a 24-hour expiration timer for posts, which will automatically delete them when the time expires. It's like the Threads version of Instagram Stories , also run by Meta.
This timer also applies to replies to posts, and replies to a post will be automatically deleted once the deadline has passed.
Engineer Chris Messina also discovered code in the iOS Threads app that mentioned a feature that would delete posts after 24 hours.
In addition, Threads supports the decentralized SNS protocol ActivityPub , and posts to Threads can be viewed from ActivityPub-compatible SNS such as Mastodon. However, according to Messina, posts cannot be deleted from other servers, so posts with a timer set will not be deleted on other SNS even after 24 hours have passed.
In response to this report, Meta said, 'We are testing a new feature with a limited number of users that will be deleted in 24 hours.' A Meta spokesperson did not provide details about the feature or the test, but said, 'It's a new, casual way to share on Threads.'
