It is reported that the 2024 'iPhone 16' will have Apple Intelligence as its biggest selling point, and the 2025 'iPhone 17' will have a new ultra-thin mid-range model, the 'iPhone Air,' to revamp the lineup.

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who handles highly accurate Apple-related leaks, has reported on what the iPhone 16 series, which will be released in 2024, and the iPhone 17 series, which will be released in 2025, will look like.

Apple revamped its iPhone lineup in 2020, releasing the iPhone 12 series with a new design and 5G support.

However, Apple has not made any major changes to the iPhone since then. The iPhone 13 Pro, released in 2021, was only a slight update from the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 14 Pro, released in 2022, had no major changes other than the addition of Dynamic Island , and the iPhone 15 Pro, released in 2023, was the first in the series to feature a titanium casing, but otherwise was basically unchanged from the previous iPhone 14 Pro.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman predicts that the iPhone 16 series to be released in 2024 will be basically the same as previous models and will not have any major upgrades. The iPhone 16 series lineup will be the same as before, with four models: iPhone 16/16 Plus/16 Pro/16 Pro Max, and Gurman points out that the appearance will not change significantly from the iPhone 15 series, and no major new features will be added.

Here are five things to look forward to in the iPhone 16 series:

The biggest marketing point is Apple's new personal AI, 'Apple Intelligence.' It will be available on all iPhone 16 models as well as the iPhone 15 Pro . It's unclear how compelling Apple Intelligence will be, but Garman wrote, 'I don't think these features alone are enough to make you want to switch devices.'

The iPhone 16/16 Plus will add the action button that was first introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro. However, Apple will add a more customizable Control Center and customizable lock screen options in iOS 18, so 'the value of the action button may be diminished,' Garman said.

・The iPhone 16 Pro will have a new camera control on the right side. This camera control button will work like a digital SLR camera button, with a light press for autofocus and a firm press for shutter release. You can also zoom in and out by swiping left and right on the camera control button while taking photos or videos.

Only the iPhone 16 Pro will likely get a slightly larger display, going from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches on the Pro model and from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches on the Pro Max model.

As always, there will be a new color scheme. The iPhone 16 Pro will replace the blue with the rose gold that was popular a few years ago. The Pro models will also have a new chip, the A18. All four models will have 8GB of memory (RAM), which is the minimum system requirement needed to run Apple Intelligence.

'If you have an older iPhone, the iPhone 16 could be a great option, but it may not be a must-have,' Garman said. 'I'm not convinced the new model will be an incentive to buy.'

However, Garman writes that the 2025 iPhone lineup will bring major changes. Apple will release a new iPhone SE as early as early 2025, which will be similar to the iPhone 14. The new iPhone SE is expected to have an OLED display and support Apple Intelligence. Garman wrote, 'If Apple can lower the price of the new iPhone SE to around $500 (about 74,000 yen), I think it could be a hit.'

According to Garman, the biggest change in the iPhone 17 series that will be released in 2025 is the presence of a new mid-range model in the lineup. At the time of writing, the iPhone lineup consists of the entry-level iPhone SE, the standard iPhone and iPhone Plus models, and the high-end iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max models. In 2020, Apple released the compact iPhone 12 mini to provide a fourth option, but this model was commercially unsuccessful. Apple then added the large-display iPhone Plus to the standard model as a new option. However, Garman points out that the Plus was also a commercial failure. The problem with these models is the price, and since the iPhone 15 Plus is only $100 (about 15,000 yen) cheaper than the iPhone 15 Pro, 'users will choose the more powerful iPhone 15 Pro,' he wrote.

Therefore, Garman points out that Apple is planning a new fourth option, a model with a similar position to the 'iPhone Air' for Macs and iPads. It is expected to be positioned between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, similar to the MacBook Air, which was released as an intermediate model between the MacBook and MacBook Pro.

Garman wrote about the iPhone 17 Air, 'It's perfect for people who want something fancier than the standard iPhone but don't need the performance, size or camera of the Pro model.' 'If an Air model is released, it will be a bigger hit than the Mini and Plus models of recent years.'

Apple plans to eventually bring the iPhone 17 Air's slim design to the Pro models, but predicts that this won't happen until at least 2027.
