'iPhone 16' quick photo review: How does the size and weight differ from the iPhone 15 and Pixel 9?

Apple's

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus were released on Friday, September 20, 2024. At the new product launch event ' It's Glowtime ' on September 10, 2024, the iPhone 16, which was the first iPhone to support Apple's proprietary AI function 'Apple Intelligence' as an unbranded model rather than a Pro model, was actually delivered to the GIGAZINE editorial department, so first of all, we checked its appearance by comparing it with the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and Google's Pixel 9.

The iPhone 16 box looks like this. The model I purchased this time was the 128GB model, and I chose the new body color, ultramarine.

Inside was the device itself, a USB-C cable, and a SIM tray pin. The Apple logo sticker that is so common on Apple devices was not included.

We turned it on and took a photo of the display in front. The display is a 6.1-inch (diagonal) all-screen OLED (organic EL) Super Retina XDR display. The resolution is 2556 x 1179 pixels.

The back looks like this. The color-infused glass is smooth to the touch. The dimensions are 147.6mm high x 71.6mm wide.

The iPhone 16 has two cameras, a 48MP wide-angle camera with a focal length of 26mm and an aperture of ƒ/1.6, and a 13mm ultra-wide-angle camera with an aperture of ƒ/2.2 and a field of view of 120°, arranged vertically. Therefore, the camera protrusion itself is vertically long, and the True Tone flash is located separately from the camera.

On the left side are the SIM tray, the volume up/down button, and the action button. The phone is 7.80mm thick.

On the right side are the side buttons and camera controls. The side buttons protrude from the side by about 1mm, but the camera controls with built-in touch sensors are flush against the side.

On the bottom there is a speaker grill and a USB-C port.

There is nothing on the top.

The actual weight was 168g.

From the left, the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 16 are lined up. Both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro are 146.6mm high and 70.6mm wide, so the iPhone 16 is 1mm larger in both length and width. However, as you can see by comparing them, the size is almost the same when you actually hold them.

When lined up with the display turned on, it looks like this. The weight of the iPhone 16 is almost the same as the iPhone 15, so the feeling when actually holding it in your hand is almost the same for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro is about 18g heavier than the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, and when you actually hold it, the iPhone 15 Pro feels a little heavier.

The bezels on all three models are about 2.0mm, which means the iPhone 16's display is slightly larger, but again, the difference is completely imperceptible.

Right side view. The thickness is 7.80mm, the same for all three models. The side button on the iPhone 16 is in the same position as the iPhone 15, and the iPhone 15 Pro is slightly lower than the other two models. The iPhone 16 also has newly added camera controls.

The left side looks like this. The iPhone 15 had a 'ring/mute switch' above the volume up/down buttons, but the iPhone 16 has the same action button as the iPhone 15 Pro.

The top surface is the same on all three models and is bare.

The bottom is the same, and they all have a USB-C port.

We also compared it with the Pixel 9, which is 152.8mm high and 72mm wide, making it slightly larger than the iPhone 16, which is 147.6mm high and 71.6mm wide.

The Pixel 9 is slightly thicker, at 8.5mm thick and the iPhone 16 at 7.80mm thick.

The actual camera protrusion was about 3.5mm on the Pixel 9 and about 3mm on the iPhone 16.

The actual weight of the Pixel 9 is 199g, so the iPhone 16 is about 30g lighter. When you actually hold it in your hand, you can clearly see that the iPhone 16 is lighter.

In our next article, we'll compare the benchmark results of the A18 chip in the iPhone 16 and check out the new camera control feature, so stay tuned.
