Google Docs has updated its Markdown features to allow importing, exporting, and more

Google has announced that it will be enhancing Markdown-related features in Google Docs. The feature will be gradually updated for all users.

Starting in 2022, Google Docs has implemented a feature that automatically converts Markdown input into some formats, such as bullet points, numbered lists, and checkboxes.

Previously, Markdown support was limited to automatic conversion as you typed, but with this update we now support importing and exporting Markdown.

Specifically, the following features will be added:

- Convert markdown to document format when pasting
- Read the entire Markdown document, convert it to a document format, and import it
- Select part of a document and copy it as Markdown
- Export the entire document as Markdown

Of these, to use the conversion when pasting or the function to copy part as Markdown, it is necessary to select 'Enable Markdown' in 'Settings' of 'Tools'. Importing and exporting the entire document is enabled by default and can be accessed from 'Open' and 'Download' in the 'File' menu.

This update applies not only to those who are registered with Google Workspace or Workspace Individual, but also to those who have personal Google accounts. The gradual release began on July 16, 2024 local time, and the release to all users is scheduled to be completed by July 31, 2024.
