In a white paper published in June, Apple said it would strengthen software support for third-party iPhone parts in 2024.

Specifically, ' True Tone ', which was previously only available on Apple's original screens, will now be enabled on third-party displays. True Tone is a feature that uses sensors to automatically adapt the color and brightness of the display to the surrounding light, making the screen appear more natural.

According to Apple, True Tone relies on server-side calibration, which varies for each individual device, and precise communication between the product display and the light sensor, so it may not be accurate enough on third-party displays. 'If your display isn't performing satisfactorily, you can disable True Tone in Settings,' Apple said.

In addition, the battery status display, such as maximum capacity and cycle count, will be compatible with third-party batteries as well as genuine batteries. However, Apple's analysis has revealed that some third-party batteries sold as new are actually second-hand and the battery status may be manipulated to make them appear new. Therefore, while the status of third-party batteries will be displayed, Apple will also inform users that it cannot verify the accuracy of the information.

True Tone and battery status indication on third-party displays and batteries are both expected to be available sometime in 2024. The exact timing is unclear, but overseas media The Verge predicts that software support will be included in iOS 18.

Apple also announced that Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair, a diagnostic tool that helps identify parts that need repair, is now available in 32 European countries, including the UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
