Apple has announced that it is working with the Japan Digital Agency to make My Number cards available to Japanese users in the Apple Wallet app from late spring 2025. Japan will be the first country outside of the United States where Apple will roll out the Wallet app's identity card function. With this feature, Japanese users will be able to seamlessly add their My Number cards to the iPhone's Wallet app, and use them to issue official certificates at convenience stores just like a physical card, and access the My Number Portal iOS app to receive online government services.

'The expansion of Apple Wallet ID outside the US marks an important step in our vision to replace physical wallets with an easy, secure and private mobile wallet,' said Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. 'We're thrilled to enable My Number Card support in Apple Wallet later next spring, giving people in Japan a seamless and convenient way to present their ID while taking full advantage of the security and privacy protections built into their iPhone.'

Taro Kono, Minister for Digital Affairs, also commented, 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Apple CEO Tim Cook, I am very pleased to be working with Apple on this bold initiative to incorporate the My Number Card function into smartphones. Currently, more than 100 million citizens have applied for the My Number Card, Japan's ID card, and it is widely used in everyday life, including access to a variety of public and private online services, as well as administrative services at over 60,000 convenience stores. It can also be used in disasters and emergencies. The Digital Agency will work to build a world-leading, safe and convenient digital society based on smartphones.'

The My Number Card in Apple Wallet is a simple and secure way to present identification on your iPhone without having to take out a physical card or hand over your device. To use it, simply open the Apple Wallet app, select the My Number Card, double-click the side button on your iPhone, authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, and hold your iPhone over a contactless ID card reader. Note that in some cases, an additional authentication step may be required when reading with a card reader.



Places where the iPhone's My Number card can be used include hospitals, medical institutions, and convenience stores, and it appears that it will also be possible to present the My Number card in certain apps, such as the My Number Portal iOS app.

Apple Wallet's ID feature provides a secure way for users to add and use mobile ID while providing security and privacy benefits that physical IDs cannot provide. Information about past ID presentations, such as where, when, and what personal information a user shared, is encrypted and stored only on the user's device, so Apple does not know the user's presentation history. In addition, if a user misplaces their iPhone, the Find My app can be used to lock and help locate the device or to remotely erase the device.
