Rakuten Kobo's first color e-paper e-readers, the Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour, review

Rakuten Kobo's first color e-paper e-readers, the Kobo Libra Color and Kobo Clara Color , were released on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Color pages that could only be read in black and white can now be read in color, and because they are e-paper, they consume less power and are easy to see even under sunlight. I was able to borrow the Kobo Libra Color and Kobo Clara Color from Rakuten, so I first checked out their appearance.

The Kobo Libra Colour box looks like this.

When I opened it, the Kobo Libra Colour itself was inside.

The Kobo Libra Colour comes in two body colours, white and black, and this time we will be reviewing the white version.

In addition to the device itself, the package includes a quick start guide, warranty card, and customer care contact details.

USB-C cable for charging.

The Kobo Libra Colour is 161.0mm x 144.6mm in size and has a 7.0-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 touchscreen display. The book's color cover is displayed on the screen.

The actual weight of the main unit is 200g.

The serial number was printed on the bottom. The thickness is 6.2-8.3mm, with a slight thickness on the right side of the display.

On the right side are the product name, various marks, and a USB-C port for charging.

The back is gray, with a power button on the top right and the 'Rakuten Kobo' logo printed on it.

Also, a finely textured pattern was carved into the back.

This is the Kobo Clara Colour package.

When opened, the Kobo Clara Colour itself appears.

The body color is only black.

Includes quick start guide, warranty card, Kobo customer care contact details, etc.

A USB-C cable was included.

The device measures 160.0mm x 112.0mm and has a 6.0-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 touchscreen.

The actual weight is 173g.

The Kobo Clara Color has a USB-C port for charging on the bottom. It is 9.15 mm thick and, unlike the Kobo Libra Color, does not have a slope.

The serial number is on the right side.

On the back there is a power button on the top left, and it also has a textured pattern engraved on it.

A side-by-side comparison of Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour.

In terms of thickness, the Kobo Libra Colour is slightly thinner.

The Kobo Clara BW (right), which was released at the same time as the Kobo Clara Color, is a model equipped with a black-and-white Carta E Ink HD 1300 touchscreen instead of a color one. It is positioned as an entry-level model with limited basic functions.

The Kobo Clara BW and Kobo Clara Colour are the same size and weight, and the only difference is whether they support color display or not.

Since the Kobo Libra Colour is stylus compatible, I was also able to borrow a Kobo Stylus 2.

The actual weight is 15g.

The tip of the pen looks like this. There is a click button on the grip part.

The pen tip was removable like this.

The Kobo Stylus 2 is rechargeable and has a USB-C port under the 'Rakuten Kobo' logo.

Next time, I plan to check what it's like to actually read a book on Kobo Libra Color and Kobo Clara Color, so stay tuned.

Kobo Libra Colour is priced at 34,800 yen including tax, Kobo Clara Colour is priced at 24,800 yen including tax, Kobo Clara BW is priced at 20,980 yen including tax, and Kobo Stylus 2 is priced at 9,180 yen including tax, and can be purchased from the following.
